New recruits Natsu 2024

Recommended Posts

Yamazaki's shikona will be Okaryu (大花竜,  おおかりゅう).

The shikona of the Takekuma-beya Mongolian recruit looks like 豪聖山, perhaps read as Goseizan.

The Hanaregoma-beya recruit is 18-year-old Yukihiro Endo (遠藤 孝大) from Tokyo's Bunkyo ward. 188cm, 104kg.

No sumo experience, instead his hobbies have been fishing, basketball and cooking.

The Futagoyama-beya recruit is so far known only as Kikuchi, seen here outside the heya.

Futagoyama stable introduced Raki a couple days ago. He speaks about his reason for joining and aspirations, and we get to hear the instructions given to a new deshi at the stable.

2nd day of maezumo - first win for Kotomotomura and the promised Miyafuji 宮富士 (Matsumoto from Fujinomiya) joins the group, with 2 bouts to catch up with the others https://twitter.com/sumokyokai/status/1790570946384007207

The rikishi of Mini-Enho's aspiration is of course Enho, he met him at the Hakuho cup and learns technique by watching Enho bouts

There was a trainee gyoji visible in the background of early morning footage of both Hatsu and Haru basho, but maybe he's not ready to start officially yet as there's no change to the Kyokai's gyoji list.

Well the trainee did join for this basho after all, for Tagonoura-beya, 15-year-old Kimura Yunosuke (木村 裕之助) from Shikokuchuo, Ehime prefecture. Maybe he's just nervous but he doesn't strike me as someone who will stick at it for long, but we'll see.

The Sakaigawa-duo with apparently heya standard kesho-mawashi from the Adachi ward Sakaigawa koenkai with firefighters of old, Igarashi with that of Tsuchimananada, Miyazaki with that of Myogiryu. Miyafuji with the Hiryu one of sempai Atamifuji. Musubiyama with a kesho mawashi of shisho Tamanoshima from his Kanazawa koenkai. Kikuchi with one of the shisho Miyabiyama, Yamada with the one of Onosato from heya sponsor AI komuten.

Everything relevant has already been posted, but I might as well add to the permanent record.

Day 3

Results:

Mz1  Kikuchi (0-1)           Mz5  Musubiyama (1-0)
Mz3  Igarashi (1-0)          Mz6  Yamada (0-1)
Mz4  Miyazaki (1-0)          Mz7  Kotomotomura (0-1)

Standings:

Mz3  Igarashi    Sakaigawa   1-0 E   |   Mz1  Kikuchi       Futagoyama   0-1 E
Mz4  Miyazaki    Sakaigawa   1-0 E   |   Mz2  Miyafuji      Isegahama    0-0-1 W
Mz5  Musubiyama  Hanaregoma  1-0 W   |   Mz6  Yamada        Nishonoseki  0-1 W
                                         Mz7  Kotomotomura  Sadogatake   0-1 E

Day 4

Isegahama's Miyafuji joined the competition.

Results:

Mz1  Kikuchi (0-2)           Mz2  Miyafuji (1-0-1)
Mz7  Kotomotomura (1-1)      Mz6  Yamada (0-2)
Mz3  Igarashi (2-0)          Mz5  Musubiyama (1-1)
Mz4  Miyazaki (2-0)          Mz2  Miyafuji (1-1-1)

Rather unusual that the extra match was given to Miyafuji here, as it normally goes to somebody who lost earlier in the session, but just as well considering his absence the day before.

Standings:

Mz3  Igarashi  Sakaigawa  2-0 E   |   Mz2  Miyafuji      Isegahama   1-1-1 W |   Mz1  Kikuchi  Futagoyama   0-2 E
Mz4  Miyazaki  Sakaigawa  2-0 E   |   Mz5  Musubiyama    Hanaregoma  1-1 W   |   Mz6  Yamada   Nishonoseki  0-2 W
                                      Mz7  Kotomotomura  Sadogatake  1-1 E

Day 5

Results:

Mz5  Musubiyama (1-2)        Mz2  Miyafuji (2-1-1)
Mz1  Kikuchi (0-3)           Mz3  Igarashi (3-0)
Mz4  Miyazaki (3-0)          Mz6  Yamada (0-3)
Mz7  Kotomotomura (2-1)      Mz5  Musubiyama (1-3)

Standings:

3-win target achieved
#1  Mz3  Igarashi      Sakaigawa   3-0
#2  Mz4  Miyazaki      Sakaigawa   3-0

Still active
    Mz2  Miyafuji      Isegahama   2-1-1 W |   Mz5  Musubiyama  Hanaregoma  1-3 W   |   Mz1  Kikuchi  Futagoyama   0-3 E
    Mz7  Kotomotomura  Sadogatake  2-1 E                                                Mz6  Yamada   Nishonoseki  0-3 W

Day 6

Results:

Mz1  Kikuchi (1-3)           Mz6  Yamada (0-4)
Mz7  Kotomotomura (2-2)      Mz2  Miyafuji (3-1-1)
Mz1  Kikuchi (1-4)           Mz5  Musubiyama (2-3)
Mz7  Kotomotomura (3-2)      Mz5  Musubiyama (2-4)

Pretty smart scheduling here with the winner of the 0-win bout essentially getting promoted into the opponent slot for sole 1-win guy Musubiyama, and the winner of that getting to play off against the loser of the 2-win bout for another full qualification.

Standings:

3-win target achieved
#1  Mz3  Igarashi      Sakaigawa    3-0
#2  Mz4  Miyazaki      Sakaigawa    3-0
#3  Mz2  Miyafuji      Isegahama    3-1-1
#4  Mz7  Kotomotomura  Sadogatake   3-2

Remaining order
#5  Mz5  Musubiyama    Hanaregoma   2-4
#6  Mz1  Kikuchi       Futagoyama   1-4
#7  Mz6  Yamada        Nishonoseki  0-4

The ichiban shusse:

His three matches weren't the sternest of tests, but Igarashi looked pretty natural to me for somebody with "only" judo experience. Good basic forward movement, no attempts to toss his opponents around just because he could. His heyamate Miyazaki is what you'd expect from a back of the line club member at a big university programme like Nichidai's. I'm positive that his desire to be in makushita within a year will be fulfilled, getting to sekitori quickly I'm not so sure about.

Miyafuji looked a bit unpolished and more of a long-term project, but there's definitely some talent there, and if there's one place we shouldn't bet against developing nascent talent, it's Isegahama-beya. Musubiyama surprised me in a good way, given his apparently complete lack of any combat sports background. Assuming he's not actually going to quit sumo within the first year, I wouldn't be shocked if he turns out the best of the so far four recruits that Hanaregoma-oyakata has collected since his takeover of the stable. Kotomotomura, well, I guess we'll all have to wait and see how far his body can actually take him in professional sumo.

All in all a pretty good round of maezumo, even the two least successful guys Kikuchi and Yamada showed a lot of fighting spirit. Kikuchi deserves the benefit of the doubt as the only other middle schooler besides Kotomotomura here. Yamada doesn't look like he'll be around for long, but maybe we'll be surprised.

New gyoji Kimura Yunosuke in action on the jonokuchi dohyo on day 13: I first thought it was training with Hakuho announced, but we have Kakuho now

He is slightly getting better, maybe he finds some special performance niche like humpta gyoji Kimura Hideaki and stays

Probably didn't help his confidence that Urakaze broke into laughter when he called the rikishi names before one of the bouts.

He can take solace on the fact his senpai do the same. I'm 99% sure I heard a gyoji yell out "Chiyotaikai" for Tochitaikai at some point this basho.

About new gyoji Kimura Yunosuke - debut in maezumo on day 3 and on the jonokuchi dohyo on day 7
