If there's one thing I loved about day 5, it's Hoshoryu getting his comeuppance from Gonoyama

The Yokozuna appeared to be fuming at Tobizaru for the attempted leg kick.

Or maybe it's just revenge for their last bout.

No at all, Tobizaru kicked him in the knees TWICE. If I was Teru, I'd be livid too.

Indeed he did. I hope he gets a double bollocking from Isegahama and Hakkaku for his lack of hinkaku.

If you're going to appear on the dohyo parading obvious weaknesses, you can't expect your opponents not to target them.
Leg sweeps are perfectly legitimate.

Tobizaru broke Terunofuji at their last meet and tried very hard to do so again. Rightly so.

Not a fan of Teru are ya. I missed the slap at the Tachiai from the flyin monkey.

What the flying monkey? (Dribbling...) Tobizaru must have suicidal tendencies. U NO SLAP YOKOZUNA! The kick was just adding insult to injury.

Had to rewatch it again and again. And the commentary..."Terunofuji kinda losing his cool" broke me. If that is "losing his cool", i don't want to be on the receiving end, when he activates rage mode.

Couldn't be scripted better by WWE! Marvelous!

Onosato bulldozed over Takarafuji today in a manner that reminded me a bit of peak Takakeisho. It even looked like he held back a bit in order not to hit Takarafuji too hard.

Poor Aoiyama, if he's seriously injured his career might end sooner than anyone expected. Hope for the best!

Oho continues his groove while Endo continues his slump. I like the "new" Oho, seems like he finally learned some assertiveness and is taking advantage of his good sumo body.

Asanoyama got himself into some perhaps unnecessary trouble by going for a makikae, allowing Nishikigi to take the initiative and pushing him back. That almost ended badly for Asanoyama but his plan b worked well enough to get him out of the situation. Well fought bout by both rikishi.

Hokutofuji slammed hard into Midorifuji's face at tachiai and the latter did well to recover. However Hokutofuji didn't let go of the initiative and it ended in another loss for Midorifuji. The small rikishi has fought well, but unfortunately the results don't show it yet. Maybe the second half of the basho will go better for him.

Takayasu back and going for the 11-4 junyusho?

Kotonowaka being too cautious at the tachiai did not end well for him. Wakamotoharu was much more determined to do his sumo. Nerves starting to play a game with the ozeki hopeful?

Daieisho going down, Atamifuji on the rise?

Tobizaru really did his best to piss off Terunofuji, starting from a face slap and ending with a leg kick. He actually wasn't too far from pulling off an upset but the yokozuna managed to weather the tricky assault.

At the end of today, Kirishima seems to be on the most stable course, even if he's one win behind Asanoyama. All other yusho contestants have shown a few hiccups here and there, which leads me to believe all of them are liable to drop a few wins. Still, looking forward to the clash of the top ranks in the second half of the basho. It's still a very close call who will emerge with the yusho.

Teru probably should get a quiet reminder not to lose his temper, but no more. His isn't exactly the usual case of "can't take the heat, don't stay in the kitchen" - he literally can't sumo without those braces and yet he still made it to yokozuna. The sweeps might have been legitimate as part of a kimarite setup, but when you consider the first slap at the tachi ai and two knee kicks in totality, it's completely understandable why Terunofuji lost it.

Tobizaru's insouciant face at the end of the bout probably didn't help matters, either.

For sure it's totally legitimate to use all allowed techniques. On the other hand it's totally legitimate for Terunofuji to get upset as well. In the end he's only human after all.

I was, then I wasn't, then I was again. His rank invites challenge.

You're right. It's only human to get pissed off, but as a yokozuna he should not be showing it on the dohyo or in the hanamichi.

Midorifuji seems like the new Endo to me. A fan favorite with a lot of tricks in the bag who should just always be ranked M3-M5. He is going to do well enough to deserve M1 and even an occasional komosubi, but generally suffer an immediate makekoshi at those ranks.

Even though there are 7 wrestlers at 4-2, it seems the basho is going to one of the first 8 in the standings right now. Seems like there are 2 tracks going now: the upper (Y,O,S) and lower (the O-boys and Kotoshoho) with Asanoyama firmly between the two. Kotoshoho has shown some spirit, but I don’t trust him to keep it up- that leaves 7. Onosato and Oho faceoff tomorrow so that will leave 6. If Oho wins wins, I can see them matching him up with Onosho (who has the day off tomorrow) on day 8, that will leave 5: the surviving O-boy, Asanoyama, and the 3 Y,O,S. Bring on day 11.

I hope Tobizaru doesn’t bump into Terunofuji in a dark alley. Which is to say I totally hope he does and would pay decent money to see it.

Aoiyama refused to use the wheelchair which already had arrived and on the way out in the end walked almost like normal - doesn't look like serious injury, but he should use it to go kyujo and prolong his career

Tobizaru at jungyo after they feed him to Terunofuji for butsukari:

Terunofuji is only at the jungyo for the dohyo-iri

Tobizaru gave a mean smile after the final bow and when he left the dohyo turned back once more with a mean look to Terunofuji, like "Next time I'll wreck you for good, old cyborg"

In my defence, I really like Takayasu and I honestly hope he'll be able to get at least a kachikoshi.

I actually feel there have been too many cheap shots at him in this forum, so maybe my joke was in poor taste...

If he didn't, it'd be like that guy getting run over by a steam roller in Austin Powers.

His bow was also non-existent. He clearly meant what he did, and would perhaps have liked to go further.

My timing is a bit too convenient, but frankly, Tobizaru's always looked to me like his funny faces and catchy dohyo demeanour were a fancy cover for a ruthless, perhaps even mean, character.
