Sakura 1,472 Posted January 25 I think an issue with Hosh is that it indicates that the shikona is Hosh/or/ryu(u), unless I'm mkstaken, which could be very possible. But I don't mind that much.
hakutorizakura 590 Posted January 25 Let's all be thankful that we don't have to call them by their Mongolian names (I mean no disrespect to Mongols, just that their names are a mouthful to pronounce for me - never mind the yobidashi) 2

For example, the current US Sumo Open heavyweight champion is Mendsaikhan Tsogt-Erdene, but we all just call him "Mendee"
dingo 1,160 Posted January 25 To be honest I support Jakusotsu regarding the shikona, but people are free to use whatever they want. And I'm free to maintain my right to quietly grumble to myself whenever I want
Asashosakari 18,786 Posted January 25 Random factoid: Under modern scheduling rules, there have been two previous tournaments that had broadly the same post-Day 11 yusho race as this one (one 10-1 and three 9-2 in sanyaku, all maegashira scores lower): Natsu 1982 and Kyushu 1993. Both ended in a two-way 13-2 playoff won by the 10-1 rikishi.
maglor 122 Posted January 25 Relating to the scheduling talk, the easiest way to make scheduling significantly better would be to go to day-of scheduling from Day 11 or so onwards, so that they don't end up scheduling 4 loss rikishi against the sanyaku because they don't know whether he has 3 or 4 losses. The Oho-Kotonowaka matchup for example would never have taken place. I have no problem with lower rankers who are still somewhat in the yusho race to be thrown to the sanyaku. Better that than let them fluke a yusho. Anyway in the last few banzukes it has appeared that lower maegashira who have a significant # of sanyaku opponents get a bit of a bump. Katooshu 3,132 Posted January 25 (edited) Wrecks the yokozuna, then loses to the 1-10 guy. The wacky adventures of Naoya Shodai. Edited January 25 by Katooshu 2 2

Tigerboy1966 1,376 Posted January 25 (edited) Wonderful, spirited sumo from Shonannoumi today. The poor bloke can hardly generate any forward movement this basho but he produced a brilliant, last-gasp reversal Edited January 25 by Tigerboy1966
sumojoann 1,256 Posted January 25 Why wasn’t there a torinaoshi (and not even a mono-I!) in the Wakamotoharu/Kotoshoho bout?

sumojoann 1,256 Posted January 25 Kirishima is absolutely amazing! Somehow he managed to keep Tamawashi’s hands completely off of his neck. Totally disarmed him and then just stood back watching him do that wild flip. Brilliant sumo.
Katooshu 3,132 Posted January 25 I feel exhausted for Onosato over these last 3 days Finally a bit more of a typical M15 matchup tomorrow.
sumojoann 1,256 Posted January 25 Terunofuji sure didn’t look like he’s one step away from retirement! Totally dominated Onosato who looked stunned for a moment as he lay on his back outside the dohyo. I loved that “business as usual” look on Terunofuji’s face afterwards. A great day of sumo!

I agree with you that splitting "sho" into "sh"-"o" is unsettling (and of course it's technically a shi and a little yo mashed together, leaving room for a surgical amputation, but still not after the sh).
