I suspect Onosato was the culprit: they actually believed he was good enough to achieve a backdoor yusho, and the other 2 Os were thrown to wolves to make sure things looked "fair". It would be nice if the next banzuke would match the in-tournament reality though. If you have an M14 and M15 spending the last third of the basho fighting sanyaku their rank next basho should represent that. From the looks of things right now, there is going to be PLENTY of room for them in the M1-M5 range. No such adjustments will be made, and you know it.
Yamanashi 3,724 Posted January 24 Down in Juryo, wily Akua tries a henka ... against Oshoma, the sekitori with the most defensive tachiai, who simply turned right and pulled Akua down (hatakikomi). Does anyone in Sumo "watch film"?
Benevolance 2,478 Posted January 24 Well, yeah, but they mostly watch shokkiri.
hakutorizakura 590 Posted January 24 They should start watching this youtube channel by a guy named Mord Dresner. Quality presentation, with occasional throwback clips and German language lessons. Lots of things to learn. Pure gold (balls mountain).

Tougher opposition ahead but impressed by his composure so far - it's well beyond his experience. That said, I'm still cheering for plucky Shikihide underdog Mogamizakura to take the jonidan title this time! Same - it's been a dozen years since Shikihide-beya's last yusho, so I'd like to see that happen. Speaking of Shikihide-beya, Urutora gave us a classic Marble vs. Bowling Ball encounter today: 19 hours ago, Katooshu said: And hair pull or not, Tanji is very impressive for 17. A real standout for me. No doubt it has happened before, but I'm quite sure that was the first time I've seen a hansoku done to a rikishi without a mage. Yamanashi 3,724 Posted January 24 Seriously, while foreigners have to rely on sometimes shady tricks to watch all but Makuuchi highlights (not that I know of any!), any heya could be recording every basho and have a library of upcoming opponent's matches.
Reonito 1,335 Posted January 24 Quite something for Takanosho to go from the lowest bout on the makuuchi torikumi to the third-highest.

Gutting as Tanji had that bout all but won, but his instinct let him down. His performance is even more impressive when we factor in that he fought (and, hansoku aside, won) 5 out of his 6 bouts in makushita. Haruyama really pulled out all the stops trying to indicate his hair was pulled, without directly saying it. Exciting times over at Ajigawa-beya, with two youngsters dominating the jonidan and jonokuchi divisions, including wins over upper makushita level guys. ---- Unrelated - Takerufuji's rampage being halted by Roga and Kitanowaka shows there's usually a gulf in skill levels between the top and bottom ranks of juryo. It seems like there are a lot more of these extreme discrepancies in rank these days. My first basho watching sumo was Ichinojo's 14-1 jun-yusho in 2019 from 4W (17th spot on the banzuke) where he didn't even face the winner Hakuho. It's very different from the matchups being given to Onosho, Onosato and Oho.

It's very different from the matchups being given to Onosho, Onosato and Oho. I recall something about the ethos being you don't give a lower-ranked challenger a shot at the Yokozuna if the latter is leading the race, and Hakuho was always a win ahead after Ichinojo picked up a loss mid-basho. Pretty sure they would have met had the records been reversed. Not sure how well this holds up in general, what the thinking is if the leader is not a Yokozuna or if it's a tie...

Hak & Kak was bad enough, but easier to stomach than "Hosh" which is wrong on too many levels! But still infinitely better than "Four Tits" which is altogether disrespectful. I don't understand why we can't all just agree to type out actual shikona. 7
Katooshu 3,135 Posted January 25 (edited) This issue comes up occasionally and I think anyone who is bothered by the informal shortening of shikona should lighten up. Is it upsetting when it's obvious who is being referred to and there's clearly no malice in it? Now calling a rikishi four tits, that is another matter Edited January 25 by Katooshu 2

Morty 1,480 Posted January 25 I don't mind a little bit of abbreviation when it is clear who you are talking about, but who the hell are Taka, Koto, and Waka? And yeah, the disrespectful nicknames need to go.

But there's only one sekitori whose name starts with Hosh (Hoshoryu) and there was only one rikishi scheduled to face Onosato on day 11 whose name starts with Hosh (Hoshoryu). So I'm not sure how someone who has clearly been following the basho could be ignorant about who 'Hosh' is in the context of them beating Onosato on day11. Just seems like stuff not to be bothered over. Nicknames are a thing in Japan and among rikishi too anyway. Edited January 25 by Katooshu

Jakusotsu 5,810 Posted January 25 Just to make my point clear: "Hosh" is neither a nickname nor a proper abbreviation but simply wrong.
Katooshu 3,135 Posted January 25 (edited) It's a shortened version of his shikona. It is not insulting, nor should it be unclear who is being referred to by it. Many of his own fans use it. Edited January 25 by Katooshu
