Kotomiyama 165 Posted January 21 39 years old and Tamawashi is still going strong. Today he upset Asanoyama and opened the yusho arasoi. We have a nice second week coming!

Mainoumi commented yesterday that the NAIYOU (content) of the loss was SAIAKU (the absolute worst). Pulling and retreating is not what the committee wants to see from a newly crowned Yokozuna. Even so, I agree that a 12-3 consecutive yusho likely gets the job done regardless of the NAIYOU. Edited January 21 by Kaninoyama
Akinomaki 39,789 Posted January 21 (edited) Asanoyama twisted his right ankle as he lost to Tamawashi but says it's ok. - he'll likely soon appear in the TerUra mummy/cyborg style, the left leg is there already o o o - I guess that's it for his yusho contention this basho Edited January 21 by Akinomaki
Gurowake 3,921 Posted January 21 Given that Kirishima won the yusho last basho, any yusho is an automatic qualification for promotion, to be denied theoretically only for hinkaku reasons.

So it would be a dumb strategy to go for. Actually I believe no metal parts. The US import braces have a solid material as support and Kyokai won't accept metal braces. Aminishiki was reported as having a metal gear and Terunofuji took it from him, maybe by now the metal is gone, but both are a violation of sumo rules anyway: no gadgets to be used - sticking to their own rules is all part of last century, I guess Isegahama as long time chief shimpan was powerful enough to have that get accepted.

Godango 956 Posted January 22 I had sound off for Onosato's KK interview. I'm curious from those who heard it, did he stick to the typical script or did his limited time in ozumo lead to a more open conversation?
RabidJohn 1,665 Posted January 22 I didn't understand what was said, but Takekuma-san's comment following his deshi's loss to Abi's henka was very terse. 10 hours ago, Gurowake said: Given that Kirishima won the yusho last basho, any yusho is an automatic qualification for promotion, to be denied theoretically only for hinkaku reasons. I don't doubt a Kirishima yusho would get him the rope: I just doubt he can yusho after taking 2 losses in the 1st week. He's capable of winning out from here, but I'm not pinning any hopes on it. Both Mongolian ozeki look like it's only a matter of time before promotion, and I can be patient.

If I heard it correctly, he said something to the effect that if a guy gets henka'd it's his own fault, and he needs to keep the possibility in mind against crafty rikishi like Abi.
Yarimotsu 522 Posted January 22 Certainly looked to me like Kirishima got away with a gift from the shimpan today. The usual dead body discussion aside, I'm expecting a redo there, and could see them being harsh with Kirishima and letting the call stand. Definitely didn't see the reversal being called even after going frame by frame.

BroadMeadow 33 Posted January 22 Shodai looked legit upset when he was initially declared the winner. Guess that was one of the matches he was trying to lose to get/keep the rank he really wants. Day 10 schedule is crazy at the top! Moving early to clear the O-boys out of the way.

The first three have 8 makuuchi basho between them, for an average of 2.67 each. The fourth guy has 61. dingo 1,160 Posted January 22 For someone who's new in ozumo and facing a former sekiwake, Onokatsu could definitely make a bit of a better effort to bow after the bout. That was barely a nod for Wakatakakage and felt quite disrespectful. Surprised that the gyoji didn't make him come back for a redo. Wakatakakage himself did it much better. Brutal tachiai by Meisei, a proper welcome to the upper ranks for Onosato. I still don't quite understand how he managed to win this bout except that he kept moving forward and didn't let go of Meisei. Abi did the henka today that Shodai was perhaps expecting yesterday. I guess Gounoyama was an easier target than Shodai. Wonder if Abi has a list of rikishi on his wall and he's checkmarked the suitable henka targets... Great win for Ura! His entertainment value is seemingly endless. Kotonowaka showed great defence once again against Daieisho. I haven't seen Daieisho's oshi so ineffective for a while, usually he manages to push back his opponents well but everything was just absorbed by Kotonowaka. Once Kotonowaka got the belt grip the bout was basically over. Kirishima probably got a minor heart attack over that sashichigae. In the end all is still well for now. Terunofuji is having a harder time than usual these last few days, but still has the strength to overpower his opposition for now. I do wonder if that will last until the end of the basho. Gurowake 3,921 Posted January 22 Anyone else annoyed by the closeness in names of Onosato and Onosho? I am, especially given they're very close on the banzuke and both doing well. it seems half the time I see one of those names on the database's schedule, I interpret it the wrong way.
