In 2023, one yusho was won by a Yokozuna, three by Ozekis and two by Sekiwakes.

What about 2024?

Which ranks do you think will win the Makunouchi yushos in 2024?

Please write your predictions in the comments below.

Please also mention which rikishi (give names!) and their ranks you think will actually win the yushos (and how many).

This will be used as a tie-breaker (if needed) to decide the yusho winner for this poll at the end of the year.

Takakeisho x2 (O then Y)

Kirishima x2 (O then Y)

I cocked up my vote above and only said there would be five yusho, but I reckon

Hoshoryu x1 (O)

Kotonowaka x1 (S)

There are enough guys capable of wrecking face in the mid-ranks and competing at high ranks, not to mention the up-and-comers, that it seems pretty likely a lot of tournaments will see at least one maegashira guy with a chance to win at the end. Three of them did in 2022; they had a chance four times in 2023, but no one pulled it off. I think someone will this time, but I haven't the faintest idea who.

I think who wins these is also going to be super-dependent on what happens in January. If Teru stays out, Kirishima wins, and he gets the rope, it's a lot more likely Teru retires. If Teru fights in January and Kiri still wins, you gotta think Teru's gone then (and in any case, if he can't win his first basho back after a long injury absence, it's hard to see him winning another one). But if Kiri doesn't win and Teru comes back in March, he might steamroll the whole game.

Trying to think of the minimum realistic numbers...

Kirishima x 2
Hoshoryu x 1

Hmm... I guess Kotonowaka makes sense, since it would be shocking if he never won a yusho in his career and now seems as good a time as any. Likewise, if I could split a vote between Terunofuji and Takakeisho, I would; I think there's just enough room left for one of them to get a yusho, but not both. I'll say Takakeisho, since at least we know he'll fight.

Kotonowaka x 1
Takakeisho x 1

So who's the last one?

...

TAKAYASU

I'M CALLING IT NOW

Give a try...

Kirishima (O/Y) x 3

Hoshoryu (O) x 1

Kotonowaka (S) x 1

Atamifuji (K?) x 1

EDIT: I made an error with voting: I put 5 O/Y & 1 S/K, while I should have put 4 O/Y & 2 S/K. I had a change of heart and I thought I could edit my vote, but it does not seem possible.

Looking at all of the questions, and the comments, we are thinking that Kirishima will have the best year!

Most of the yushos will go to the Yokozunas and Ozekis - as can be expected.

80% of us think that at least one yusho will be won by a Sekiwake or a Komusubi.

A decent 40% of us think that at least one lower ranked Maegashira will rikishi will snatch at least one yusho.
