Akinomaki 39,797 Posted September 11, 2023 (edited) Now all papers report it 34 minutes ago, Asashosakari said: I don't feel comfortable starting a thread on it yet, but Nikkan (in an odd 9pm release) claims that "multiple people are saying" that Tokushoryu "will" retire and that the Kyokai "will announce it soon". No idea if that means it'll become official tomorrow, or... He'll be the next Sendagawa https://www.sanspo.com/article/20230911-4RL6TXMYURLDHH5UE7OTBGILX4/ Edited September 11, 2023 by Akinomaki 2
Akinomaki 39,797 Posted September 11, 2023 A few pics before in the next days the NSK publishes the intai announcement - we all know that once you tell someone you retire and it's gets public, you can't retract it of course the yusho Hatsu 2020 oooo o o
Gurowake 3,922 Posted September 11, 2023 (edited) He went 5-1 against Terunofuji, including a win in Terunofuji's first yusho where in my opinion he made Terunofuji look really bad. The link from the DB still works for it. My memory of it was a slightly different, where Tokushoryu had him off-balance for much longer, but it's reasonably close for a 8 year old memory. That was their only match when they were both in the joi. They had 4 matches in Makuuchi before that, with one of those being when Terunofuji was first in Juryo, and had one match in Juryo after that on Terunofuji's way down. Gurowake 3,922 Posted September 11, 2023 The best part about his Yusho was that plenty of people predicted he wasn't even going to be in Makuuchi that tournament, but Tomokaze was demoted all the way from M3, which those people thought wouldn't happen. The selection stats for GTB aren't working at the moment so i can't say how prevalent that idea was, but I just checked the top 10 results and half of them had Tomokaze in Makuuchi instead of him. One such person even had Tomokaze not as the last person on the banzuke.

There's a good video on YouTube by NHK with most(?) of the speech including the funny and heartwarming parts. Can't really give a good link since I'm on the phone but if you search "Tokushoryu interview" it'll pop up right away. Otsukaresama Tokushoryu! His fairly ordinary makuuchi stalwart career was much brightened by the yusho, single kinboshi on the following basho against Kakuryu and most of all his affable personality. I hope he'll be able to stay with the Kyokai for a long time.
MrGrumpyGills 119 Posted September 12, 2023 Tokushōryū's yusho was one of THE highlights of the last few years in sumo for me. Even though I'm a Takakeishō fan I rooted for him to take the cup back then and he even won decisively I think he chose the right time to retire and hopefully can shed some of that weight to have a reasonably long and healthy life.

just_some_guy 256 Posted September 13, 2023 His yusho was the single most unexpected thing I've seen in my time watching sumo. Can't think of a more unlikely winner. Best of luck to him in retirement.
Yarimotsu 522 Posted September 14, 2023 I started watching after the yusho, did see highlights of it afterwards but it's not the same. Will miss 'the egg' as I called him. Wonder what this means for Takarafuji, given their apparently very close friendship (but of course they are in different stables, so probably very little). Aoiyama I suspect won't hang around much longer without Tochinoshin to motivate him and train.

RabidJohn 1,665 Posted October 8, 2023 Nice try, but Takanohana's victory 'oni' face is about as honest as expressions get - and it's not a smile.
