Assuming that Wakatakakage doesn't actually join later on, it's the first time* since Aki and Kyushu 2017 that back-to-back tournaments will each see at least three fully kyujo sekitori.

* Without shenanigans involved, i.e. Covid kyujo, suspensions, or the Harumafuji/Takanoiwa incident that left the latter out of two tournaments (counting that, Hatsu/Haru 2018 would be the latest back-to-back triple kyujo).

Anzai, another injury plagued Naruto rikishi, has retired. Shame, as he was only 21 and reached a career high of Ms29 just last basho.

Jd100w Hamasaki is also kyujo, and Otake-beya reports that he too has retired. I wonder if we'll see another cut to the Sandanme ranks soon?

Minor correction, Ginseizan is in Jonokuchi.

Hakuoho's medical certificate states: 3 months or more expected till recovery after surgery for a dislocation of the left shoulder joint  - a return not before the Hatsu basho for him: the oyakata told the press today that Hakuoho aims for a return at the Hatsu basho

Terunofuji is expected to need kyujo till Oct. 8th (rare to see a precise date here - so he'll join the Aki jungyo later on) for disturbance of a vertebral end plate AND diabetes - the oyakata didn't tell the truth here:

I guess it counts as absence, though today only from his yumitori duty

back on yumitori-shiki duty too - it's the first time that a Jonokuchi-ranked rikishi has done it.

Not for long, Satonofuji only did it on day 1 and 2, now Yuki is doing it again https://mainichi.jp/articles/20230912/k00/00m/050/182000c

Satonofuji suddenly got sick - he has a bout tomorrow, likely he won't appear

Just one withdrawal from the lower divisions ahead of Day 5:

Jk2w Moriurara

He had a large plaster on top of his head in his two bouts so far, so maybe he's been dealing with a head knock.

Ahead of Day 7, one more rikishi makes a late start to the basho, but three others have to withdraw.

Entering:

Jd92w Takabaho

Withdrawing:

Ms24w Kotoozutsu (fusenpai Day 6)

Sd30w Shosei

Sd66w Tsugaruumi (fusenpai Day 5)

Jd98e Kotofuno had a fusenpai on Day 6 but hasn't withdrawn at this point. We'll see if he's able to fight his next bout which should be on Day 8.

Three rikishi have withdrawn ahead of the next round of lower division action:

Sd24e Mishima (fusenpai Day 7)

Sd79w Tatsuki

Jk15w Higonoryu (fusenpai Day 8)

Nabatame injured his left knee while trying to kotenage Tochimusashi today, Futagoyama reports that he will be kyujo so his bout tomorrow should be a fusenpai.

Also, Haruyama tried a one-legged landing (they always make me wince) after he lost to fellow rising star Gonoumi today. He couldn't get back up to the dohyo and had to be helped away without putting any weight on his left foot. I expect kyujo.

Kotofuno appeared and seemed to have won his bout, sadly for him eagle-eyed Shikimori Tomokimi spotted from a mile away that he had dipped his toe in the sand. A mono-ii confirmed the excellent decision, so Datenomori got the isamiashi win - all Kotofuno got was some paper to stuff up his bloody nose.

Ahead of Day 11, one rikishi makes a late start and two others return to action, while two have to withdraw.

Entering/Returning:

Sd30e Kamitani

Sd66w Tsugaruumi (fusenpai Day 5, withdrew Day 7)

Jk2w Moriurara (withdrew Day 5)

Withdrawing:

Ms7e Nabatame (fusenpai Day 9) - left knee injury as mentioned in the previous post.

Jd39e Aoifuji - had to be stretchered off the dohyo after suffering a bad left knee injury, as reported by Sponichi.

Also from the previous post:

Evidently it wasn't as bad as I thought, Haruyama is still in the basho (now with some strappings on his left knee) and won easily today to get his kachi-koshi.

One other note, Sandanme gyoji Shikimori Kainosuke has been kyujo since Day 6, I didn't notice until now.

Tenshoho looked winded from having a giant pancake him, I didn't get the vibe that he was injured, but fingers crossed anyway.

Kiho

Right hamstring injury, one month of treatment expected. Suffered, unsurprisingly, when he got pancaked by Chiyomaru on Day 10.

(And here I was starting to grow faint hopes for the first basho without a sekitori fusenpai since Haru 2006...)

I hope he takes this time to take care of his mangled foot.

But he will not do it, of course - who am I kidding? (Sigh...)

Ahead of the final round of lower division action, Nabatame returns to try and cushion his fall, while half a dozen Jonokuchi rikishi enter in order to stay on the banzuke. That is somewhat balanced out by five other rikishi having to withdraw.

Entering/Returning:

Ms7e Nabatame (fusenpai Day 9, withdrew Day 11)

Jk8w Ginseizan

Jk10e Fujihara

Jk16e Wakaikki

Jk17e Kyokushori

Jk19e Sadanojo

Jk20e Yoshinofuji

All six of the late entrants are in action on Day 13; Yoshinofuji takes the opening bout against the increasingly-hopeless (and winless in 2023) Higohikari, while Ginseizan goes up to Jonidan to meet Kirimaru. The middle four are paired off by rank.

Sandanme gyoji Shikimori Kainosuke also returns from Day 13.

Withdrawing:

Sd48e Asakiryu

Sd60e Asaobora (fusenpai Day 11)

Jd5e Kototaiga

Jd37e Yumenofuji (fusenpai Day 12)

Jd57e Masarufuji (fusenpai Day 12)
