Sold out doesn't mean all who have a ticket are there, many only come for the 2nd half of makuuchi, others have left by then. And sold out it is for the NSK - the chaya and agencies who got a whole bunch may not have sold them all to THEIR customers

Seiyashi 4,071 Posted September 4, 2023 Implicit in his statement that his goal is not to be (just) in makuuchi. He's clearly planning ahead. Excelllent call.
Akinomaki 39,797 Posted September 4, 2023 (edited) No time set for recovery, a return this year is almost impossible - probably a drop to below his starting rank. Hakuoho injured his right shoulder in high school, opted to have surgery and heal completely and thus didn't join ozumo at once. Right after entry, just before the Hatsu basho he injured the left shoulder, then it wasn't really bad yet and he entered, then re-injured it in April - he is in pain since May, got the advice from the shisho and the former Miyagino (then Magaki) to heal it properly, but entered Natsu with it and then Nagoya to aggravate it this far. o o o o o o o o Edited September 5, 2023 by Akinomaki
dingo 1,160 Posted September 4, 2023 (edited) Hope the surgery works out for him. Edit: I'm surprised Miyagino/Hakuho let him enter the previous basho despite his own suggestions to heal. I would've expected the oyakata's word goes, especially with rikishi that young. Edited September 4, 2023 by dingo

I guess the advice came mainly due to the influence of the former Miyagino, who was removed soon after. The policy of Hakuho about letting his deshi fight injured was visible all the way, just look at Kiho. Giving this advice seems like just a formality in sumo, no rikishi is expected to follow it, just like nobody cares about the time needed for recovery that the medical certificates state.

Reonito 1,335 Posted September 8, 2023 According to the official site, Hakuoho is kyujo as expected, and despite some rumors that he might enter, Wakatakakage thankfully is too.
Akinomaki 39,797 Posted September 8, 2023 (edited) Wakatakakage has a medical certificate saying he still needs about one month of rest after surgery https://www.sankei.com/article/20230908-M6RHJCFGLVO2JPN5KV2PI5AW6Q/ - apparently he listened to the doctors, he will start his return from makushita level Articles of course say "should he rest the whole basho", but until Kirishima last basho, that was just a standard phrase, with nobody giving even one thought about entering later on Edit: with the recent banzuke making policy though, two, three wins would be enough to ensure his stay in juryo Edited September 8, 2023 by Akinomaki 1

Benihana 1,901 Posted September 10, 2023 Last bout and no comments so far? Asanoyama doing Ozeki sumo, Takakeisho not doing Ozeki sumo. Happy to see at least the other Os going strong. Some mattas, a torinaoshi, the east side almost sweeping it, could have been a worse start to a basho.
Benihana 1,901 Posted September 10, 2023 Hello? Anyone here? Do we really need the 'muricans to wake up, to get this going here? I can't remember ANY basho day being so quiet.

Maybe having Hakuho on hanamichi duty on the east side has something to do with it? The west had Akiseyama.

He has to watch "Waterboy" with Adam Sandler. I'm dead serious. He is too nice. He has to channel his inner Chad Rowan. Akebono instilled FEAR in his opponents, just by staring at them. And then he raged them off the dohyo. Hokuseiho...i want to give that good boy a belly rub, and that's exactly the way he fights. The biggest of fluffs, but no bite.
