Akinomaki 39,755 Posted September 13, 2023 Interesting 500 day: today Mitoryu (29) had his 500th career dohyo appearance - no big deal, but Takakeisho (27) had his 500th makuuchi appearance - I almost forgot how long he is there. In today's bout it looked, like his right arm was only there to distract the Evil Twin. I hope his shoulder is better than Hakuoho's. Ura doing attack sumo is so much fun to watch. (apologies if I've jinxed him) I have a feeling starting in makushita put a bit pressure on him to succeed quickly, especially with Hakuoho setting the example. Now he seems sort of liberated, plus the margin of error in Juryo is much bigger with 15 bouts vs only 7 in makushita. Or perhaps he just found his mojo. OK I'm being purposely ridiculous here but the way things are going I can't see any rikishi going undefeated for the next 10 days. Asanoyama and Kirishima did a proper bout. Was really enjoyable to watch, one of best of the basho so far. What exactly is Hokuseiho trying to do with his elbows on the opponent's shoulders? He's done it a few times this basho. I can understand going for kimedashi or kubinage, but that doesn't look like either of them. Unless it's a very awkward version. Aoiyama got his 500th Makuuchi win! Congrats! Ouhou was actually aggressive today for a change and was rewarded with a nice win over Hiradoumi. Hope that gave him some self belief to do more forward moving sumo. I was pretty optimistic about his prospects and have posted as such on this forum. However, that was under the assumption that when he came up against legitimate first-tier opposition he would learn the basics and rely on those. For example, standing straight up at the tachiai and allowing your arms to be raised (or even voluntarily raising them as he did today) is the opposite of textbook sumo. Go in crouched, don't raise your hips until you're driving your opponent out. Make contact and grab the belt, or if they refuse contact then push straight forward with your superior reach. Or at least that's my read of basic sumo structure and what he seems to have completely missed the importance of. His performance so far really screams injury/ exhaustion and I'm not sure whether to hope if that's the case or not. If it's just a mental issue... this might be his peak. An even more 'sleepy' Ichinojo, probably plagued by all the same problems of a larger frame. Here's hoping he can snap out of it. Surely Miyagino has some coaching that can be effective.
