Aki 2023 discussion (results)

Recommended Posts

Interesting 500 day: today Mitoryu (29) had his 500th career dohyo appearance - no big deal, but Takakeisho (27) had his 500th makuuchi appearance - I almost  forgot how long he is there. I already was surprised when my (personal) kensho flashback from Aki 2019 reminded me that he was top then as well as this time.

Atamifuji going 4-0 in his second makuuchi basho with only one arm is quite impressive. In today's bout it looked, like his right arm was only there to distract the Evil Twin. I hope his shoulder is better than Hakuoho's.

Ura doing attack sumo is so much fun to watch.

Else a quite disappointing day.

It is actually his second time in Makuuchi (after Kyushu 2022) but I see your point.

Hapless Takanosho used to a be an Ozeki contender. Hope he gets his mojo back.

Or maybe just get fully healthy.

No, it's physically impossible for an uninjured rikishi to gambarize properly. It's written into the Code of Conduct.

Another basho with an unimpressive start, and the vibes that this will be another 12-3 line yusho

Onosato looks unstoppable so far.

He has certainly been hugely impressive in his last two bouts. We haven't had a zensho in juryo for a very long time; would that get him a promotion to maku'uchi? (apologies if I've jinxed him)

If Aoiyama had won, it would've been his 500th Makuuchi shiroboshi.

I have a feeling starting in makushita put a bit pressure on him to succeed quickly, especially with Hakuoho setting the example. Now he seems sort of liberated, plus the margin of error in Juryo is much bigger with 15 bouts vs only 7 in makushita. Or perhaps he just found his mojo.

Kirishima vs Asanoyama —- my favorite bout of the basho!  I kept yelling, “Trip him!  Trip him!!!”  What an ending!

After day 5, are we gonna have a 10-5 yusho after a whole 16th day of playoffs? (Beingninja...)
OK I'm being purposely ridiculous here but the way things are going I can't see any rikishi going undefeated for the next 10 days.

Asanoyama and Kirishima did a proper bout. Was really enjoyable to watch, one of best of the basho so far.

What exactly is Hokuseiho trying to do with his elbows on the opponent's shoulders? He's done it a few times this basho. I can understand going for kimedashi or kubinage, but that doesn't look like either of them. Unless it's a very awkward version.

Aoiyama got his 500th Makuuchi win! Congrats!

Ouhou was actually aggressive today for a change and was rewarded with a nice win over Hiradoumi. Hope that gave him some self belief to do more forward moving sumo.

Ex-Takamisakari seems to be a rikishi magnet, he got landed on a couple of times today.

Reading the above, I don't think it's ridiculous.

In Makuuchi I see a final 11-4 with a 3 or even more rikishi play off.

I was surprised not to see a mono-ii in the Abi-Takakeisho bout.

But okay, I can live with the result.

Fabulous bout between Kirishima and Asanoyama
Asanoyama fell really hard, though, smacking the back of his head into the dohyo. Hope he's okay.

So ugly. You'd think it was Day 15, not 5 with how worn out these guys look.

Certainly it doesn't look like sumo. I was pretty optimistic about his prospects and have posted as such on this forum. However, that was under the assumption that when he came up against legitimate first-tier opposition he would learn the basics and rely on those. For example, standing straight up at the tachiai and allowing your arms to be raised (or even voluntarily raising them as he did today) is the opposite of textbook sumo. Go in crouched, don't raise your hips until you're driving your opponent out. Make contact and grab the belt, or if they refuse contact then push straight forward with your superior reach. Or at least that's my read of basic sumo structure and what he seems to have completely missed the importance of.

His performance so far really screams injury/ exhaustion and I'm not sure whether to hope if that's the case or not. If it's just a mental issue... this might be his peak. An even more 'sleepy' Ichinojo, probably plagued by all the same problems of a larger frame. Here's hoping he can snap out of it. Surely Miyagino has some coaching that can be effective.

Tamashoho was in an excellent position to advance to makuuchi next basho, but after today's limping it looks like he won't complete the basho, let alone get kachikoshi

Onosato looks like he’s found his groove, showing great calm/patience in his bouts.

The future looks bright
