Tigerboy1966 1,372 Posted September 12, 2023 Great battle at the top of juryo between Kitanowaka and Roga, two guys who seem to have realised that they should have been in makuuchi by now.

All three losses were tough to watch, but we all know he's going to grab enough unconvincing victories against ailing people to empower the committee to keep him in that orange shimekomi. I like how this gradually evolved from a few people making jokes about the committee's supposed favouritism for him, to pretty much everyone just taking for granted he'll be treated very kindly. Hankegami 412 Posted September 12, 2023 Surprised that no one has already commented about the Ozeki bouts of today. Total Upset Day. The only one to get a win was Takakeisho of all people. The Hamster is now 2-1 and absolutely back on track for his KK. Kirishima lost to a Hokutofuji on fire but there's no shame in that (well, it could be a problem for the yusho run if Hokutofuji doesn't slow down). However, Hoshoryu did a major error against Tobizaru, and with a 1-2 on Day 3 he absolutely must change his pace. Anyway, Hokutofuji is on a mission. Three Ozeki heads under his belt, and 12 days yet to go. He wants the Cup he missed in Nagoya really bad, and he has an actual chance if he keeps his act together. The 3-0 arasoi leader-board now includes underdog Onosho, and the low Makuuchi group of Kinbozan, Mitakeumi,, Sadanoumi, and Atamifuji. I would keep an eye on Mitakeumi in particular. He's an ex Ozeki put at M11, and he's going to get a lot of fodder down there. However, Mitakeumi being Mitakeumi, he could take a spiritual vacation to the Philippines on week 2 while leaving his soulless body at the Kokugikan to get yorikiri'd out as per usual. Otherwise, he has the potential to be a serious yusho contender from down there. 2

I suppose Asanoyama falls under that upset heading, too. Nishikigi totally shut down that dangerous left arm and left him looking pretty helpless without it. Then again, ozeki (current, former and wannabes) should be well aware that Nishikigi, Hokutofuji and Tobizaru are all proven dangers to their scorelines.

Akinomaki 39,515 Posted September 12, 2023 Miyagino was at the oyakata talk event in the sumo museum today. He wants to raise 2 yokozuna to have proper attendants for his kanreki dohyo-iri in 22 years. About rival Nishonoseki: "The dohyo now is becoming another. Who will produce a yokozuna or ozeki first, is I think the fight of the oyakata" https://www.sponichi.co.jp/sports/news/2023/09/12/kiji/20230912s00005000235000c.html

dingo 1,114 Posted September 12, 2023 I fear Aoiyama might be next of the old guard retiring in the near future. He'll get his 500th win this basho but based on the first three days I can't see him getting many more. Probably down to Juryo for him and who knows how long he'll manage to stay there... Hokuseiho today... Looks like he's been going to Shodai's School of Standing Tachiai and mastered the art perfectly. I suppose the teacher can be proud? Takakeisho is moving or being pushed backwards even more than I remember from previous basho. He might be winning and even healthy to some extent but the explosive power is not there anymore. I'm afraid his ozeki career will not last too long. And Hokutofuji... wow, just wow.

I don't think I've ever seen anyone do that before, even with Aoiyama who would be the most obvious target. But with Aoiyama, I've always worried more about his opponents getting suffocated ........ or knocked out by a flying tit! I guess Ryuden just wanted to expand his repertoire. A friend on Sumo Forum I correspond with said, "I saw Ryuden try to milk that other rikishi." I just about died laughing! I had predicted that he would retire right after Tochinoshin. I could see the cracks then, especially when he was defeated by none other than Midorifuji (Haru, I believe). He ended up not being the next retiree, but I see it coming very soon. I agree that he’s looked bad in all of his losses this basho.

If not for his shoulder, he would probably still be hanging out in lower Makuuchi. Aoiyama looks relatively healthy at the moment.
