My sansho guess:

- Kanto-sho

Atamifuji

Takayasu with a win

Hokuseiho with a win

- Shukun-sho

Atamifuji with a win

- Gino-sho

Daieisho

I think after the monster number they awarded last time, they'll not be giving many away as freely.  K for Atamifuji definitely, and I guess an S for him for a 12th win is reasonable, but I'm expecting to see Daieisho to need to win for a G.  They'll also need to give at least one to anyone else that wins the Yusho (other than Takakeisho obviously), but I don't see Hokusieho getting one without the Yusho given his start, and Takayasu just doesn't seem worthy of one for just an 11-4 either given his history, though at least he didn't start 2-4.

How is it two actively participating Ozeki - NOT from the same Heya - are not matched during a tournament? Kirishima and Takakeisho haven't fought this basho. Why wouldn't they be matched on Senshuraku?

Thoughts?

Hokuseiho would be the first yusho winner to start 2-4, beating out Harumafuji's 2-3 from the last time 4 losses was the minimum.

Also true of Daieisho.

Kanto-sho for Atamifuji

shukun-sho: whoever (not named Takakeisho) wins the yusho - so pick your choice from the 4 remaining candidates [Daieisho, Takayasu, Hokuseiho, Atamifuji]

Indeed a response to last basho, as few as possible after a record sansho shower - we only have Takakeisho to win it now for a drought

The intrasanyaku matches are planned to be spread evenly over the tournament, with those among the higher ranks on the last few days.  This is all planned out well in advance, but is subject to change if they think that the maegashira who have a chance at winning the yusho should be tested against higher ranking opponents, particularly those higher ranking opponents who are themselves in the Yusho race.  If Takakeisho faced Kirishima, then Takakeisho couldn't face Daieisho as well, as that match is far more important.  Takakeisho "should" have faced Daieisho on either day 13 or 14, but Takakeisho faced Atamifuji on Day 13 for the above reasons, and then also faced Hoshoryu Day 14 as would have been planned, and if he had faced Kirishima Day 14 you'd be asking why he hadn't faced Hoshoryu this tournament.  Takakeisho could have faced Atamifuji even earlier than that at the cost of his matches against Wakamotoharu or Kotonowaka, but that was before it was as clear as it is now that the Takakeisho-Atamifuji match was probably going to be needed.

In the past where there were strong Yokozuna where at least one was capable of 13 or more wins, this kind of thing happened far less often, but still could be seen for instance in Ichinojo's debut in Makuuchi.  Now that it is much rarer for someone at the top of the banzuke to manage 13 wins, there's generally going to be at least one, if not more, maegashira that remain in the race until the end.  This tournament is even worse than the ones we've seen in the past.  This trend was so prevalent that a few basho ago I made a poll about how many matches among sanyaku would be skipped for such yusho race matches against maegashira, and as luck would have it, that tournament none were needed, which I think no one guessed (but I may be remembering wrong).

Man I hope Atamifuji loses his (regularly scheduled) bout. It'd be a shame if he just wins, long before the musubi no ichiban, and then the rest of the bouts are for small change.

That being said, I feel like I've been hoping for this outcome every basho and it always ends disappointingly with the person 1 win in the lead just winning.

(Praying...)

In juryo they knew how to give someone a challenge. So Onosato is the first to fail to get the yusho among the three with top winning streaks as new juryo - Takakeisho was the first to fail there with 8 straight

All seven Ms playoff matches went with rank. Grats to Hitoshi, nice way to cap off his year in makushita.

With all the head clashes in sumo, it surprises me that we don't see more cuts near the eyes like the one Hitoshi suffered vs Kayo.

BTW, did Abema's coverage just miss it, or was there no redraw between the first and second round of the makushita playoff?

I think they learn pretty early, that it's better to lower the head at tachiai and NOT to go in face first, when 150kg+ come flying at you. Cuts would be one of the lesser problems. Thinking 'bout broken noses, cheekbones and jaws...

Hoping for Chiyoshoma, that this weren't his last kensho. And if, at least he got some in his last makuuchi bout.

Playoff bound! No shame in Atamifuji losing that one. Still has a chance for redemption. As does He Who Shall Not Be Named...

Reading the above, I don't think it's ridiculous.

In Makuuchi I see a final 11-4 with a 3 or even more rikishi play off.

Quoted 10 days ago....

Looks like Aoiyama is the next big gaijin riding off into the sunset.

That's why we need Shishi in makuuchi ASAP to hold up the tradition of european doughboy.
