Six shikona changes on this banzuke. Two were already known of course at the time of the Juryo promotions announcement - Mukainakano is now Tenshoho, and Ishizaki is now Asakoryu. As well as becoming a crimson dragon, he has changed the first kanji of his given name, although the reading stays the same.

In the lower divisions, oft-injured Suguro deserves a change of luck along with his first shikona, he is now Fujikensho.

In Hakkaku-beya, Kitanomine switches away from his father's shikona and honours his hometown instead, as Fukutsuumi.

Over in Michinoku-beya, Yasunishi gets a rather unusual shikona that I'd like to find out the origin of - he is now Nikko, and changes the given name to Rinichi.

Finally, Tamanoi-beya's most recent recruit Saito gets a rather unwieldy-looking (at least in Romaji) shikona, Togyokko. He also makes a given name change.

J13w Ishizaki Takuma > Asakoryu Takuma (朝紅龍 琢馬,  あさこうりゅう たくま)
J14w Mukainakano > Tenshoho (天照鵬,  てんしょうほう)
Sd62w Suguro > Fujikensho (藤健勝,  ふじけんしょう)
Sd67e Kitanomine Tawara > Fukutsuumi Akira (福津海 旭,  ふくつうみ あきら)
Jd76e Yasunishi Rintaro > Nikko Rinichi (日煌 凜一,  にっこう りんいち)
Jk7w Saito Yukihide > Togyokko Katsuya (東玉康 勝矢,  とうぎょっこう かつや)

One rikishi alters his given name, while two more change a kanji but not the reading:

J4e Oshoma Degi (出喜 > 出気)
Sd28e Dewanojo Shuta > Shota (昇太,  しょうた)
Sd58w Mukaida Hiroki (浩基 > 浩希)

The initial posting of the Kyokai's kaimei list also showed Oshoma changing the middle kanji of his shikona from 勝 to 翔, but this has now disappeared. For the record, this is how I wrote his entry, had to put it in for posterity or my precious Juryo 4 joke will be wasted. (Laughing...)

Quote

Speaking of kanji changes, Oshoma has changed the middle kanji of his shikona from victory to flight, no doubt hoping to rise above Juryo 4 sometime this decade. The second kanji of his given name has also changed, also no reading change.

I've added plain versions of the new rankings to the makuuchi, juryo and makushita-joi posts. We'll do a proper survey about the two alternatives before the next basho. :)

But yeah, Shimanoumi's gonna be J12e, isn't he?

Yup :-/

At least it's slightly more palatable now with near-universally beloved Akiseyama holding Shimanoumi's myoseki for the time being. :-P More seriously though, they really do hate to put promoted makushita rikishi ahead of juryo incumbents these days - Tokihayate's Ms1e 7-0 only passed Shimanoumi but not even Shiden's J13e 8-7 as well. If we were to consider Ms1e as J15e, that implies that a 7-0 against top makushita opposition is worth at most the same as a 9-6 against the bottom half of juryo. Not that I really believe that they're analyzing it like that, but whatever their current mindset is based on, I can't say I agree.

What the heck went on with Ichiyamamoto?  Is it a case of giving good banzuke luck to someone who returns from a mid-basho absence?  Or did they treat it as a 4-9 and not a 4-11? (Or both?)

The cases of extremely good banzuke luck for MK in very high juryo (say, J1-J3) seem to be stacking up of late. Method?

It's not worth much, but J7w is exactly where I thought he'd land. It looks to me he got lucky that underdemoting him was still slightly less egregious than other overpromotion/underdemotion possibilities for that slot would've been.

And now looking at Makushita, I'm seeing Tsushimanada and Chiyonoumi received lighter demotions than I expected.  I was way off with Fujiseiun too, but I was also off with Wakatakakage, and predicting how they'll treat full absences is tough.

I should probably at some point recalibrate my Makushita movement scores.  It looks like they're being a good bit more lenient to 2-5s and a bit less lenient to 3-4s at least looking at my predictions compared to where they ended up.

It helps that there were only 5 KK in J4-J7 slots across the last two basho, out of a theoretical maximum of 16. (3x Nagoya, 2x Natsu)

Ichiyamamoto under normal circumstances would have had a target rank of J10e.  Shishi, Takakento, and Chiyosakae all had a target rank of J9e, plus Akua had a target rank of J9w.  They're apparently being nice to those with high Juryo double digit losses at the same time they didn't give much if any leniency to Mitaekumi and Midorifuji for similar performances in the Maegashira joi, which is a place that the demotions are far more reasonable to be lenient from than the top of Juryo.

Yeah, my GTB entry was severely affected by my expectation that Mitakeumi and Midorifuji would've been given the same treatment that Ichiyamamoto ended up getting. It feels like they've mostly been doing the following:

 - In case of doubt, they'd usually rather underdemote a bad MK from a high ranker than to overpromote soft KKs above them from down below

- If two or more rikishi have similar target ranks when coming from very different places of the banzuke, the one coming from a higher position tends to have priority, particularly if they're being slotted in ranks considerably higher than said target rank (aka 'banzuke luck')

Both could be described as part of the 'air resistance' phenomenom, a term I've seen here and duly adopted. Why punish Mitakeumi and Midorifuji, who knows.

I think this shimpan group is just being more inconsistent than usual. I know these things need to be looked at in context, but last basho Nishikigi fell 5 ranks after a 3-12 at M3, and this time they dropped Mitakeumi 9.5 ranks for exactly the same result. They also treated Midorifuji worse than they treated Kinbozan last time, though the difference is less extreme.

What are the chances of Hitoshi or Kamito to make it to the paid ranks this tournament? I have not watched much of them so I do not know what to expect l.

Hitoshi is the more reliable pick of the two, I’d say. He’s got a pretty good university pedigree and has only racked up one non-kyūjō MK since debuting. Kamito has had a hard time breaking through the jōi in the past.

I knew there was going to be some mid-Maegashira randomness.  Biggest variance from my prediction was where I had Mitakeumi and Ryuden together at M9. (Eh?)

The reading of Saito's new shikona has been revised, now Togyokuko (とうぎょくこう).

(Tagging @Doitsuyama in case this needs a manual database update for the torikumi grabbing to work)

Yasunishi is the victim in the Michinoku violence www.sumoforum.net/forums/topic/42735-violence-in-michinoku/

After he revealed it to the media, he had 2 times 2-5 results and wanted to lighten up his darkened mood, esp. since he always had a character of looking at things negative. He thought hard to find a bright name - 日煌 is e.g. gleaming day - and with the help of the heya's trainer he decided himself on this new shikona: "The number of strokes was also looking fine" (one of the superstitions at name giving in Japan): 6-1 this basho
