Newer Ozeki Kotonowaka?

Recommended Posts

Suddenly, Kotonowaka needs 13 wins. May - Kirishima yusho → Ozeki. July - Houshouryuu yusho → Ozeki. Aki- Kotonowaka yusho → Ozeki? Kotozakura returns? This is a place holder in case.

14, first of all. That's if they even count the 8-win basho in a 8-11-14 run.

Dad has more pull than Uncle

Something about owning a heya, I believe Uncle doesn’t have one

We need an official rule! If Dad has a higher position in NSK, does the discount increase?

Dad factor is a 1-win discount? How about Uncle factor? (Laughing...)

Uncle has no sway in Ozumo and was in the disgrace camp when they left.

If like here dad is the one who first decides if there is a promotion, definitely.

13 wins and a yusho, coupled with a Takakeishou demotion should do it.

More like being the head of the judging department who makes the recommendations???

I don't see Kotonowaka going 14-1. But 11 is a very good result to be starting an ōzeki run with. That said, while he has been a regular joi member for some time, I don't know if he's so good as to be able to make ōzeki after Kyūshū. I rate Daieishō and Wakamotoharu better than him and look what happened to those two.

And with his first san'yaku stint, and only 4 basho, all at komusubi, they're not going to be eager to promote him with anything less than 33, and might even ask for more, as they did with Takakeisho. When I've looked at the few denials with 33+ over 3, newness to san'yaku was a common thread. I'm not going to try to divine whether his family ties alter this calculus.

Kotonowaka is younger and should have more upside (or so it seems).

That reason alone is not good enough. He still has to show that he has the potential skill that can be grown into. To be honest? His sumo hasn't been that inspiring so far.

In any case, it's a moot point if he goes single digits in this basho. I think that's pretty likely if the rest of the joi are healthy.

This is Shodai territory. :-D

that's 32 wins with a year of Kachi-Koshi's to his name. Might not be as dominant as Hoshoryu's run, but I can see how it'll happen. Plus Shodai was 100% deserving. 2 Jun-Yusho's right before the run began.

That's a big "if".

I don't think it's that big an if, but we'll agree to disagree.

(To be clear, I also meant single digit KKs, so 8-7 or 9-6, not just double-digit MKs.)

Over the last 2 basho the promotion of a new ozeki has gone from being "essential" to "quite nice" so no need to apply any special favours.

Both Takakeishō and Kirishima failing to clear kadoban is, I think, highly unlikely.
