Izori made its first appearance of the year in this basho, with Miyagi toppling the much taller Tokunomusashi on Day 6, with a nice landing for style points as well. On Day 9, Raiho defended well against Daiseizan and then brought his opponent down with a superb uchigake. It's a minor statistic but of the 11 utchari performed in this basho, 8 were in the Jonidan division, the most in a single basho there since 2015 Natsu. To see more you have to go back to the 1990s when the division was larger, and thus had more bouts taking place. Having said all that, perhaps the pick of the bunch this basho came in Makushita thanks to Toshunryu. While eight bouts were decided by sotogake here, my favourite was the one employed defensively by Urutora on Day 3, somehow staying in at the tawara and ending up with a yorikiri win. Speaking of yorikiri, it was the most common kimarite for the first time since July 2021, ending the 11-basho run of oshidashi dominance. Kimarite from kettei-sen bouts are not included in the statistics.
