A desperate attempt to get a KK?

Only one win more would be enough for Asanoyama to justify this move - he wants to keep his higher up banzuke position now that he managed to return there - and even if not: "Losing the rank by simply staying kyujo or fighting for it and losing is something different." He told the shisho yesterday evening that he wants to reenter  https://hochi.news/articles/20230719-OHT1T51029.html?page=1

In exchange Kiho likely will be kyujo tomorrow, he couldn't walk on his own and needed the wheelchair today after injuring the left big toe as he lost to Akua by abisetaoshi - one win away from kachikoshi and safe in juryo http://www.sanspo.com/article/20230719-GX26J7WIFJOFDCPEE5NYHCHI34/

Being Kiho, he may go on on one leg or return later if he drops out tomorrow

Earlier, I warned about the possibility of Kiho ruining his career if he keeps fighting with a maimed foot.

7 wins should be enough to keep his spot in juryo at that rank anyway, as a 7-8 J13e has never been demoted to makushita. If it's that serious hopefully he has some sense....

A KK from the bottom of Juryo (or Makuuchi for that matter) often gets well more than one rank promotion, so he might think it's worth it to try to get a bunch of extra breathing room and progress to Makuuchi rather than slink back a spot (or stay put).

His foot will never heal at this rate.

No word on his kyūjō. Is he/Miyagino for real?

Or maybe the grand plan is to henka his way to KK and go kyūjō thereafter.

Also, we saw 3 sekitori re-entrances this basho, is that a record?

Ahead of the last round of lower division bouts, one rikishi returns after a short break while four others start their basho.

Entering/Returning:

Sd82w Kosei (fusenpai Day 10, withdrew Day 11)

Jd71w Hishuyama

Jk7e Sadanojo

Jk8w Suio

Jk17e Sonoshun

No return for Satonofuji, so Yuki should complete it as yumitori-shiki performer.

Assuming they aren't retiring, the following rikishi will be banzuke-gai for the next basho:

Jk10w Daikinryu
Jk12w Michihaya
Jk14e Satokaneko
Jk16e Yusui
Jk17w Sano
Jk18e Nakashima
Jk19e Karino

I'm pretty relieved to hear that Kiho's struggling with his toe. Watching the bout, I thought his knee had snapped, which would generally mean worse news.

About 1 month of rest needed for a left foot Lisfranc joint ligament injury is the medical certificate for Kiho. He injured that part beginning of April and got the diagnose that it would take 6 months to heal completely, but we all remember that he fought through the whole Natsu basho with it to get his juryo promotion. It hadn't fully healed also at the start of this basho, he took painkillers to be on the dohyo - this is his first kyujo so far. http://www.sponichi.co.jp/sports/news/2023/07/20/kiji/20230720s00005000338000c.html

Press reporting M5e Hiradoumi is kyujo for the final day, due to a left leg injury apparently sustained in his last bout.

Kotoshoho will collect the fusensho.

Did not show up for their day 15 bouts:

  • jk8e Sachinoyama (vs jk13w Fujihara)
  • jd79w Byakuen (vs jd77e Ryuji)
  • sd1w Kotoryusei (vs ms60w Hayanami)
  • ms39w Kotoyusho (vs ms44e Hanafusa)
  • ms38e Daishoryu (vs ms34w Hoshuzan)

Slow start at makushita, with 3 fusen on the first 8 bouts. My memory's a bit misty but I do think that at least Daishoryu and Kotoyusho were indeed in physical difficulties after their 6th bout...

Particularly gutting for Kotoyusho as he was sitting on 3 wins. Very telling that he didn't even try to eke it out for a KK. EDIT^ Actually Kotoryusei, thank you @Yubinhaad for spotting the mixup.

A minor mix up of Kotos here - Kotoryusei was the one who stood at 3-3 and ends make-koshi. Former Juryo Kotoyusho finishes 4-3.
