Akinomaki 40,037 Posted July 16, 2023 So all those reported in pain before the basho went kyujo, though it was back pain for Asanoyama - and Kirishima returned, for now. The back problems likely lead to some unhealthy movements.

His arm is swollen and this morning he himself requested to go kyujo. The oyakata wants to let him reenter if he recovers early, like it is customary this basho. The medical certificate says: partially torn left biceps brachii and 4 works of rest seen necessary for this part - not the whole Asanoyama. He can still reenter and fight just with the right, like Hokuseiho. o o Edited July 16, 2023 by Akinomaki

I'm only referring to reports like those I posted above that criticize his reckless sumo, both for him and for others. Maybe I haven't posted them before, but talk like this is going on for years, though mainly in the low level press.
Seiyashi 4,072 Posted July 16, 2023 Usually this talk revolves around kimarite like kotenage, for instance Tamawashi against Takayasu a few years back. I suppose it could be just bad luck or coincidence if it's associated with a specific rikishi that doesn't seem to be going out of his way to specifically injure his opponents, although how would you objectively tell? Does not like to lose and goes all-out regardless of anything. Take your pick. 5

Those two are both returning to the basho as of Day 9. Nishikimaru fights Nishikiori tomorrow, while Furanshisu will wait for Day 10.

If Wakatakakage returns in November, that would give him four more months of recovery. He will have fallen out of juryo by then, but that’s still only eight months post-surgery. Even that seems incredibly ambitious. The Google translation of the article says his return “within the year” is considered “delicate.” Not sure how it reads for real, as that sentence could mean a lot of things (calendar year, a year from the injury, etc.). Well the low level press can stuff it and if they wanna diss rikishi we can talk about it at asakusa on august 11 7pm
dingo 1,212 Posted July 16, 2023 There's nothing new in talking about dangerous or reckless sumo moves. Kaio was widely known for his kotenage that almost ripped arms off rikishi who attempted to resist. There's quite a few examples of dangerous kachiage and so on. Imo this should be discussed. Now whether the rumours about Hoshoryuu are well founded or not is a different matter. I suppose until we see suspiciously many of his opponents getting injured, it's not really good to accuse him of recklessness.

It doesn't matter if he really is doing dangerous sumo, apparently many Japanese fans think he's reckless. If he makes it to ozeki, his popularity will rise and these talks will disappear. For now you can measure his lack of popularity by the few appearances in the spirited rikishi poll.
Yubinhaad 11,592 Posted July 18, 2023 Satonofuji was kyujo for his bout today, so I expect we'll see someone else doing the yumitori-shiki for a change. Back to Shohoryu?

Shohoryu was kyujo last basho, but 3-1 and trying to get going in a positive direction again. Certainly bow-twirling duty every day will be just the thing to focus him on his type of Sumo. He can only return to the basho from Day 13 now, so Yuki should have at least two more days with the bow. It's quite rare for the main performer to return to the role after a kyujo though, the last one was Takamiwaka in 1993 Natsu.
