dingo 1,212 Posted July 10, 2023 I wonder if he'll be able to get kachikoshi with max 11 days remaining. A healthy Kirishima for sure, but an injured one...
Yubinhaad 11,591 Posted July 10, 2023 A trio of Jonidan rikishi have withdrawn ahead of Day 3: Jd19w Iitsuka - had to be taken away in the wheelchair after suffering a left leg injury in his first bout. Jd56w Yukiamami Jd70w Kyonosato (fusenpai Day 2) I forgot to mention that Futagoyama-oyakata (former Ozeki Miyabiyama) is back on shimpan duty here, he sat out the Natsu basho after some poor health due to kidney stones.
Akinomaki 40,037 Posted July 11, 2023 (edited) Kirishima will be back on day 4, he's on the torikumi vs. Kotonowaka - first time since the start of Showa for a new ozeki after a day 1 kyujo. After training today he went to a hospital for treatment. He wanted to enter and talked it over with the shisho and he let him do so. o https://www.sponichi.co.jp/sports/news/2023/07/11/kiji/20230711s00005000392000c.html Edited July 11, 2023 by Akinomaki

Kishinoyama 582 Posted July 12, 2023 I remember the post by Kintamayama about the Terunofuji back injury during training. I guarantee it was more serious than we were led to believe. Their is always pressure to enter when you are the only Yokozuna.

This image seems pretty demonstrative of some possible defects with disc endplates. It's a thin membrane either side of the discs in your spine, separating them from your vertebrae. Having slipped the same disc and undergone surgery for it, that's a bad enough injury without anything else complicating it. Usually recoverable though. My surgeon said resting generally doesn't help with slipped discs. 1

Terunofuji with tachi-mochi Midorifuji and Takarafuji Because of acute back pain, Terunofuji stopped training after one bout today and didn't talk to the press after the dohyo-iri. - most likely he won't be in the yusho hunt this time On 02/07/2023 at 09:27, Akinomaki said: Terunofuji yesterday stopped keiko after one bout because of acute lower back pain, but today with his dohyoiri attendants was 5-0 with Midorifuji and 3-2 with Takarafuji: "Just some sudden pain. There's still one week ... Each day in consultation with the body, the same as always" https://www.sanspo.com/article/20230702-ZYKBIWF7KZKIHCMPK3ADPEY6II/ Just what I expected, I have over 30 years of hernia experience - never had surgery. You can cover for it at the expense of your knees, Terunofuji had no option for that. It grows worse gradually, so he could attempt to cover it up at first. He had some history of lower back pain before his first rise to ozeki, then the knees became the thing in the focus. I found "disturbance of the vertebral end plates" for 腰椎椎体終板障害 https://www.ikeda-c.jp/byouki/disturbance_of_the_vertebral_end_plates.html - mine was at the top of the end plates/bottom of the next section Edited July 12, 2023 by Akinomaki
RabidJohn 1,719 Posted July 12, 2023 (edited) My herniated disc ended up impinging on my right femoral nerve and effectively killed it (so I'd have been unable to do a kanreki dohyo-iri in March). I'd advise Terunofuji to go intai, drop the weight (and hopefully reverse the diabetes), and save what's left of his back for his old age. The knees can be replaced... But he's a yokozuna who wants to be a dai-yokozuna, so I expect he'll hang on. Edited July 12, 2023 by RabidJohn
Yubinhaad 11,591 Posted July 12, 2023 Ahead of Day 5, two more Jonidan rikishi pull out of the basho: Jd39e Furanshisu Jd94e Nishikimaru (fusenpai Day 4) - was limping slightly after his first bout, although it didn't seem too bad at the time.
Yubinhaad 11,591 Posted July 13, 2023 (edited) J3e Ichiyamamoto is kyujo from Day 5 according to the Kyokai website. Atamifuji will collect the fusensho. Edit: Left knee injury requiring two weeks of rest and treatment, say the press. Edited July 13, 2023 by Yubinhaad
Yarimotsu 548 Posted July 13, 2023 Called it yesterday - Ichiyamamoto looked a lot less than 100% on day 1 but seemed to worsen his injury yesterday. Leg/back as always.
