Let's look at some entry stats :-)

Yokozuna pick....
USA 21
England 11

USA is favoured 2 to 1 over England, which reflects past history, and the current betting odds.

Ozeki pick....
Germany 21
Spain 11

Identical spread to the Yokozuna pick. This is a little more surprising, as Spain has marginally better betting odds.

Sekiwake pick....
France 15
Australia 9
Sweden 8

Almost half have chosen France - with the rest nicely balanced between the co-host and the former champions.

Komusubi pick....
Canada 10
Japan 8
Brazil 7
Netherlands 7

I think a good balanced spread among the Komusubi options.

Upper Joi-Jin pick....
Norway 14
Denmark 9
Italy 9

Norway is the favoured team - which matches the betting odds, where there is a slight gap ahead of the other two.

Lower Joi-Jin pick....
Portugal 24
Ireland 8

Portugal has been selected by 75% of us! It will be on more players squads than any other team for this competition.

Upper Mid-Makunouchi pick....
New Zealand 13
South Korea 10
Colombia 9

Who would have thought that a team from Oceania would get more picks than one from South America or even one from Asia? It's nice that over a third of us will be rooting for one of the co-hosts.

Mid Mid-Makunouchi pick....
China 13
Switzerland 10
Argentina 9

A decent split here, with the former power-house of women's football, China, getting a few more than the others.

Lower Mid-Makunouchi pick....
Nigeria 18
Jamaica 9
Haiti 5

More support for the African team over the two Caribbean teams combined. Haiti (with the two players who have it as a 'special' team , so must pick it, and Mr Froggy's 'forced' pick following his drone rules), has only been selected by two players with a completely free choice - and is the least loved team this tournament.

Lower Makunouchi pick....
Costa Rica 10
Zambia 9
South Africa 7
Morocco 6

The Central American team gets more picks than the three African teams. But the overall split is pretty good.

Really Low Makunouchi pick....
Panama 11
Philippines 10
Vietnam 11

The Central American team receives marginally more picks than the two Asian sides. But an excellent split, I think.

A perfect split!

Overall picks....

Below are the % picks for each team at the world cup on our squads....
Yes, there are more picks for the lowest in Group A than the highest in Group G. With a lot of support for teams in Group A, this means that our Bench competition will get interesting from day 1 of each of the rounds in the group stages.

Haiti 15.625% - lowest Group D
Morocco 18.75% - lowest Group H
Brazil 21.875% - lowest Group F
Netherlands 21.875% - lowest Group E
South Africa 21.875% - lowest Group G

Ireland 25% - lowest Group B

Jamaica 28.125% - Group F
Zambia 28.125% - Group C

Canada 31.25% - Group B
Costa Rica 31.25% - Group C
Philippines 31.25% - joint lowest Group A
South Korea 31.25% - Group H

England 34.375% - Group D
Panama 34.275% - Group F

Spain 34.375% - highest Group C

Portugal 75% - highest Group E

Interesting picks. From my perspective, it looks like that history from around 5 to 20 years ago has had a strong impact in players' choices.

But I'm already regretting underestimating one particular team...

Jejima's comments: There seems to be a lot of similar picks for players in this division. Everyone has Portugal and Nigeria. However, the full gamut is covered for Low Makunouchi picks - so perhaps surprise results in the real World Cup could be key here? I am imagining that this group will have close scores (maybe some draws?) and managerial skills for placement will be important.

Round 1
Rhinoshima (New Zealand) vs Krisachiyama (Norway)
Jakusotsu (Philippines) vs Kaba (Switzerland)

Round 2
Rhinoshima (New Zealand) vs Jakusotsu (Philippines)

Group A - Refioji Nekonishiki

Kaba, Rhinoshima (@Jejima), @Jakusotsu, Krisachiyama ( @Achiyama)

Please send me your line-ups in e-mail to bandey@szumo.hu, or in PM here in forum. The sooner is the better.
I'm setting the deadline traditionally to 1 hour before the kick-off. If my list is correct, that is

8 am CEST (7am UK Time, 3pm JST) on Thursday, July 20.

I reconsidered the deadline, Athenayama has right, I still have to publish your line-ups in time, too.
8pm CEST (7pm UK Time, 3am* JST) on Wednesday, July 19

I just hope I converted the time zones well - actually it's 20 July 2023 19:00 UTC+12 (the kick-off itself)

Jejima's comments: This group is lacking any 'special' teams in the Yokozuna and Ozeki positions. Also, three of the teams have their representative teams ranked higher than their counterbalance teams. These two facts make me that very careful placement will be required for the special teams in the line-up.

Round 1
Pitinosato (Australia) vs Nekonishiki (Ireland)
Asapedroryu (Nigeria) vs Athenayama (Canada)

Round 2
Athenayama (Canada) vs Nekonishiki (Ireland)
Pitinosato (Australia) vs Asapedroryu (Nigeria)

Round 3
Athenayama (Canada) vs Pitinosato (Australia)
Nekonishiki (Ireland) vs Asapedroryu (Nigeria)

Jejima's comments: Father (Andonishiki) and daughter (aminoumi) have very similar squads. Their fates might be decided on who has chosen the better Ozeki? Meletyoshi is the first declared team (so far) NOT to have Nigeria!

Round 1
Meletyoshi (Spain) vs Ganzohnesushi (Costa Rica)
Andonishiki (Zambia) vs aminoumi (Japan)

Round 2
aminoumi (Japan) vs Ganzohnesushi (Costa Rica)
Meletyoshi (Spain) vs Andonishiki (Zambia)

Jejima's comments: All players have Germany, Portugal and New Zealand.  There is good variety among three of the sanyaku slots (ignoring Ozeki Germany), so we should have some interesting matches.

Round 1
Kuma Koma (England) vs Tanetakahiro (Haiti)
Djodjoyoshi (Denmark) vs Achiyama (China)

Kuma Koma (England) vs Djodjoyoshi (Denmark)
Achiyama (China) vs Tanetakahiro (Haiti)

Jejima's comments: Considering that Portugal as a representative team is different to it as a 'normal' team, this group does not have any teams common to all players, ensuring variety.

Round 1
Kimyama (USA) vs Baku (Vietnam)
Oyama (Netherlands) vs Portugal (Koorifuu)

Jejima's comments: A lot of variety in the squads - with the notable exception of Ozeki Germany. It is the second Bench football competition in-a-row that Jejima and Fujiko (husband and wife) have been in the same group. They are joined by two friends from Athens.

Lordshamrockyama (France) vs Fujiko (Jamaica)

Jejima's comments: The 'non-human' in this group, is supposedly the intelligent one of the two 'non-humans' entering this competition. I will try to give ChatGPT as much information as possible, and let it make its picks. Will the humans fare better than the machine? A decent amount of differences among the picks to make an interesting group. Oh! I have just realised that Bumbiachiyama and Chiyonosora are both youngsters. I don't know their exact ages, but I am guessing  they are aged somewhere between 7 and 16 (@Achiyama and @Andonishiki - what are their ages?). How will Finngall do in this varied group? It's going to be an interesting group for Athenayama to refioji!

Round 1
Finngall (Sweden) vs Bumbiachiyama (South Africa)

Round 2
Chiyonosora (Argentina) vs Bumbiachiyama (South Africa)
Finngall (Sweden) vs ChatGPT (Italy)
