Only two Sekiwake next basho.

Must be pretty unusual to have had more than the requisite two for 8 consecutive basho! In fact, I think there was a stretch of 9 in 1992-1994, but that's it.

Whippersnapper! The first time Tamawashi  was Ms2, we still had Kaio, Chiyotaikai, Kotomitsuki and Yokozuna Asashoryu!

Well, what about the fifth time?

This was the end of multiplication of sekiwake

Worth pointing out it's only Wakamotoharu's second MK in as many years in makuuchi. Given that he's turned in double digit KKs in the joi before, he ought to be back in short order.

Climbing up to sekiwake is not as easy as falling out of it. Kotonowaka and Daieisho aren't going anywhere.

WMH has displayed a level of consistency in the jōi that many short-lived sekiwake from my recollection have been unable to.

I think we’ll see him back at the rank soon. I don’t think he’ll go any higher, however.

Sell-out of 6980 on day 15, after Atamifuji lost 10% left, another 10% after the final bout, after the yusho interview about 50% remained - NHK coverage ended there as well. By the time the NHK cup was awarded, about 10% remained, even less than that for the final kami-okuri ceremony that concludes the  basho, about 17 minutes after the broadcast stopped at 18h JST. o

I wonder whether the numbers are about normal for other basho, pre COVID. Feels like a lot of people not bothering to stay for the award ceremony shouldn't be surprising.

Kitaharima went through the rank Ms2 five times.

It is correct, you need to hustle to the various heya senshuraku parties that start around 6pm-ish.

only the yusho winner’s party starts a little later.

It's getting dark pretty early this time of year (~5:15 PM).  maybe that had something to do with it.

He got there by forcing an extra slot with 11 wins at K; high bar but could happen again even without an opening

That was the only 11-4 Makuuchi basho of his career.

But it can happen again, of course.

I just realized that Ura will finally make it to Komusubi after generating lots of hype eight years ago. I guess most have given up hope by now.

Tamawashi at 1568 consecutive matches, with the record at 1630. Barring injury withdrawal, falling to makushita or retirement, he will break the record on day 3 of Aki 2024

Is that a certainty? Only moving up to M1E seems possible, not that I GTB...

A total of 4 losses from maezumo to juryo was (and still is) hype-worthy.

I'm amazed he managed to come back from the knee injuries and establish himself as a joi regular.

I'd never thought of him as sanyaku, myself. At this stage, I've already suffered from "Miss Them Only After They're Gone" syndrome too often in regards to unique rikishi, I'm determined to focus on enjoying Ura for as long as he sticks around.

Unless they go soft on Wakamotoharu or prefer Atamifuji, which I don't see happening.

Over on the promotion/demotion thread, we consider Ura pretty much a certainty. It definitely won't be Wakamotoharu—they haven't done that since the 1950s and they've promoted records like 8-7 at M5 and 9-6 at M8 to komusubi over a 6-9 S.

I don't think it would have been Atami even if he'd won his last match, which would have given him an argument. Thankfully, he made it easy on us so we can be joyous for two months instead of two weeks.
