Kitanofuji is again kyujo for the whole NHK sumo broadcast

That’ll be the fifth straight tournament he’s missed now.

Considering that his office simply said “because this is a personal matter, we cannot provide details”, it is a little concerning. I am wishing him well, whatever is going on.

Ounokatsu is starting at Mkts 15 and has a day 1 bout, in case there were any lingering doubts.

He faces Kotodaigou on day 1.

So I guess that means somebody in the Ms top 15 ranks is absent (should be Onokatsu vs Ms15w Hokutenkai otherwise, not Ms16e Kotodaigo).

I wonder if all the Yakuza Eviction stuff means that actors like Ozawa Hitoshi and Matsushige Yutaka can never show up to a basho without getting hassled by the security guards.

It's just a ritual. :-D

Wakatakakage vs Kayo in day one.

Thats an intersting one. Curious to see in what shape the former sekiwake is coming back in action.

Not good. Not good at all. Kayou won.

Why is Bakatakakage on the dohyo? How stupid can a single person be?

Day 1 rather lackluster, all around. Some ring rust in evidence. Disappointed in the performances of Hokutofuji and Ura, neither of whom mounted much offense against their opponents. Takayasu and Hoshoryu and Daiesho were looking good

Looked like everyone except the gyoji was expecting a matta call in the final bout. Bad luck for Hokutofuji, but as they say in soccer, you gotta play to the whistle.

Day 1 just finished. My first impressions, of course to be taken with a massive pitch of salt sine it's, well, day one. Everyone's fresh, everyone's ready.

The first guy I noticed from the early fights is Tamawashi, who slipped down to M12e, his worst placement since after Aki 2013 (10 years ago, basically). The Old Fox appears on full gears on, and had no trouble dealing with Takarafuji. If he manages to keep his shape throughout all 15 days, he can get 10+ from his position. Tamawashi will turn 39 next Thursday, and at his age he usually has a good basho/bad basho cycle. From a first look at it, it appears to be a good basho this time around.

After that much talking about the grand old man of Makuuchi, let's talk about a youngster. Someone put something weird in Oho's chanko, methinks. I've never seen him this aggressive. He went full Akebono against poor Hiradoumi, chasing him with repeated nodo-wa like a madlad (or a Daieisho, see below). The Oho I know is a laid back good lad, which does 'old man sumo' all the time, back-stepping and hatakikomi by the rope (see Aoiyama back in Juryo this very day). It's also how he won against Hoshoryu a few basho ago. It would be good if he keeps with this style, he desperately needs to move forward.

Doten boy Atamifuji seems still in a good shape. He looked like a little Teru with his ottsuke arm-block against Myogiryu. Being still at M8w he has a good chance to rack up several wins against the middle rankers, and make yet another good basho. This if he keeps up with a similar performance all though the basho, for sure.

I would put Abi under watch for the moment. He trashed Gonoyama with madly aggressive Strangler sumo. He's going to go places if he keeps with this sumo. One rank up, Daieisho is on the warpath again. Meisei is no easy foe, but Daieisho spammed nodo-wa like a craze. He even had to make it twice because Meisei managed to break his rythm at some point. Daieisho has a far greater stamina than Takakeisho, for sure.

I say a couple of uncalled matta today. The first was Takayasu's. He took Wakamotoharu by surprise and won a battle on the belt. Takayasu. Against Wakamotoharu. I mean, I know that Papa Bear is no Takakeisho and knows what a belt is - and what he can do with it. But it was surprising nonetheless. Talking about Takakeisho, he clearly stole the idea without even paying royalties to Takayasu. He caught again Hokutofuji by surprise and overpowered it with his usual Hamster-zumo (no surprise belt game this time around). I thought that 'Keisho was going to have a laid-back basho given that his neck is reportedly acting up again, but he's going full Hakuho here. He can see the rope - somehow - and he's going to play every trick he can do to get that. Good luck, Hamster.

Finally, the two Mongolian Ozeki. Both looked good, honestly, performing a totally aggressive tachi-ai straight out from Kiribayama's school back in January, when he started his Ozeki run. It is therefore not 100% surprising that His Ozekiness Kirishima II (King of Beautyfaceland, Duke of Ladcaster, Lord of Misty Island, Most Ozeki Order of the Kirby - sorry, I always chuckle because of his numeration as second Kirishima) did it again against poor Ura, who even tried to resist and had to be forced and crushed out. Far more surprising that Hoshoryu took notes and ceased to go on a belt grip like a good yotsu-zumo schoolboy. A very good idea, by the way, since Shodai looked like he wasn't planning to lose the match out of boredom as per usual. From their first look from this Day 1, the Yusho race could be a personal matter between those two. Time will tell, anyway.

With regard to Abi, it was mentioned on the NHK broadcast that he underwent elbow surgery right after Aki and there was question if he's even enter Kyushu. He felt good leading up to the basho and decided to enter, but did very little keiko other than with his lower-ranked heya mates. A convincing day-one win, but let's see how the elbow and overall condition hold up over 15 days.

After Midorifuji lost to Shonannoumi and was walking back to the dressing area, he was greeted with a smile by Chiyonokuni, who was in a blue jacket doing security duty.  A few quick friendly words were exchanged.  It was nice to see.
