If you refer to the figure at the top of page 6, you will see that he has defeated both of those opponents on this streak - the caveat is that Abi was not a sanyaku rikishi at the time.

I know Ichinojo and Tamawashi had those big Yusho runs in Maegashira, but they at least had history with being elite/the very best. Nishikigi is at a career high rank and performing the best sumo in the whole tournament. It's awesome to watch.

Interesting to see that the puroresu moment between Tsushimanada and Chiyonoumi got such a positive reaction from the crowd. Maybe people don't really mind hinkaku-breaking moments once in a while, and if not overly disrespectful.

M1 Nishikigi 6-0 against only sanyaku opposition*. I'd never have believed it had I not seen it. Can he make it a clean sweep with Kotonowaka tomorrow?

I expected Ura to go for a quick ashitori win (somebody will), but what we got was extraordinarily entertaining.
Not hating on Hokuseiho, btw. I remember Akebono enduring some embarrassingly awkward losses when he first appeared in makuuchi.

*I'm obviously including a fusen-sho, and the yokozuna. I'm old school. The banzuke and I consider yokozuna to be a special kind of ozeki, which is one of the eponymous three titled ranks.

My reading on tradition in general, and hinkaku by extension, is that it's not so much about what people 'mind' or 'expect' so much as what the culture / tradition becomes when that aspect is no longer enforced. Sumo without an emphasis on hinkaku isn't sumo at all - I hope we don't have to see that in action at any point in my lifetime.

As an aside, I came back to the thread to mention Miyagi's excellent izori he pulled off today.

Agreed. Someone on this forum once said that they were attracted to sumo because of its intolerance for punks and rogues, and I heartily second that opinion.

While on the topic of hinkaku, shoutout to Hakuōhō, who's actually putting effort into his post bout rituals (the tegatana, the bows). Time will tell if he keeps it up as he grows, but it's very pleasant to see a young rikishi rocketing up the ranks but still clearly putting heart into the small things.

Aoiyama is on the way to Juryo. The tsuppari is not effective any more, he doesn't do many pulldowns nowadays either and there's nothing else left.

Cool to see Hakuoho and Gounoyama going head to head once again, this time in Makuuchi. Sweet payback for Hakuoho this time.

Kotoshouhou is another victim of the recently married curse. Although his slump is a bit longer than just this basho.

Takanosho finally got his first win. I feel for him, cause I think his pre-basho keiko results were quite good yet he was 0-5 until today. His losses haven't been that bad either, he just somehow hasn't been able to do his own sumo I guess. Today was better, more aggressive against Tsurugishou.

Ura vs Hokuseiho -- my god, Ura threw everything towards Hokuseiho, including the kitchen sink, the bathwater, the baby and what else have you. And it worked out. Definitely bout of the basho for me so far.

Tobizaru, well I guess he watched Ura's bout really closely and got inspired I guess? Nice win against Mitakeumi.

Nishikigi didn't let the pressure of Gounoyama and Takayasu losing get to him and is now the sole leader. Didn't think I'd ever get to say that to be honest. But his sumo continues to be rock solid and if he continues wrestling like this, I'm not sure who can challenge him.

The ozeki contender trio had a so so day. With all of them on 2 losses already, we might even end up with no promotions at all which would be quite disappointing.
