Stoked for Hoshoryu. I had him picked to be wearing the rope by hatsu next year in the polls (curse his injury in hatsu this year disrupting what SHOULD have been his ozeki run); but I remain confident he can get there at some point next year.

Hakuoho, what a revelation. I'm actively trying to not get too excited; we've seen new rikishi storm up the ranks before and fail to remain at the standard they set upon entering (See Endo and Ichinojo). ut if he can keep himself healthy and keep up this sumo we've really got something special coming up in the future. That Hoshoryu v. Hakuoho match had all the feelings of big match quality that I personally haven't felt since Hakuho v Terunofuji in Nagoya 2021.

With the emergence of a couple of ozeki; 2-4 more where it's there is a pathway/you can easily visualise them making the rank (with a couple actively in the hunt) and a bunch of amateur talent entering the game -- exciting times ahead!

I would say it went even higher - I've never felt anything like it in the four+ years I've been watching (although some of it may be attributed to rebound from COVID silence). Hakuhō v Terunofuji was a swansong and a "what could have been" but 3 years delayed. Hōshōryū v Hakuōhō was almost Asashōryū v Hakuhō-like in the buildup back at the height of their rivalry, even if the match itself was a bit of a letdown. If they both remain healthy and fulfil their potential this will be the first of many classics from a new generation.

No disagreements from me. It was epic, and yes, felt like "this is the future great rivalry of this generation". I just hope that holds true; Hakuoho is due some kind of dip in performance/wins; it'll be about his response to that. And of course the biggest "if" of all in sumo; his staying healthy.

We've seen a few fair calls of 'changing of the guard' that were false alarms in the past 5 years, but this basho feels different, like it's the launching point of a new era.

Really sad for Hokutofuji missing out on the yusho, but happy Hoshoryu was able to break through and surprised at the amount of emotion he showed afterwards, really fantastic moment.

100% this, on both counts. I'm definitely tempering my expectations (because yes, we've been here before) but I'm cautiously optimistic.

This could be an instruction clip. "And this is how you flip a Hokuburger. Make sure it's well done on both sides and juicy inside."

Well, several folks commented on how profound the Hoshoryu-Hakuoho match was for them, and I won't dispute that it was a great match, extraordinary in its very existence and an epic start in the top division for this young fellow, recently taking such a momentous shikona. But when I watched it the first time, I thought it was over at the niramiai. I would have been amazed if the kid had pulled off a victory in that final match.

That said, I was awfully impressed with the route that led him to that final match, beating both of the leaders from Day 12, and posting a remarkable record for a 19 year-old in his first top division honbasho.

Once again, some great sumo throughout the basho!

I'm eager to see how he handles a full joi schedule, though from M17 I'll probably be waiting until at least November. I can't see him doing a Hokuseiho in the middle ranks, and it's fairly obvious from the name what Miyagino's expecting of him.

Exciting times.

As for injuries... I was worried when I first saw all the tape on his shoulder, but I saw nothing to suggest he was actually hampered by his old injury.
I did notice, however, that he really did not like falling on it directly. I reckon the tape's a preventative measure atm.

I took once-in-a-lifetime holidays trekking in the wilderness without Internet during this basho and is the first basho I miss in seven years. Unfortunately, is the basho of my man Hoshoryu rising yet another step.

It is fun to think that few months ago we were concerned about having no Ozeki and now we have three. Let's hope that they will be healthy in September.
