Happy to see Hoshoryu fulfill his potential, and even more excited to see where he goes from here. Aside from the Hakuoho asterisk, I think he's the top division man with the most potential to earn the rope.

5) Longest sanshō: Nishikigi with 103 from debut.

Come the next banzuke, he's also going to figure highly into the slowest-to-sanyaku lists. 3rd slowest from hatsu-dohyo and 7th slowest from makuuchi debut, if I'm not mistaken.

The right man won it. But we got yet another "weak" makuuchi yusho result, these are shaky times indeed.

Decade # basho 12-3Y 11-4Y % "weak" yusho
1950s 42 5   12%
1960s 60 5   8%
1970s 60 7 1 13%
1980s 60 6   10%
1990s 60 7 1 13%
2000s 60 3   5%
2010s 59 5 1 10%
2020s 22 9   41%

It's not like it's detrimental to the sumo on display. In 25 years of watching, I've never seen guys with records like 7-3 go as hard into their bouts as they've been doing the last couple of years - they all know they still have a shot at a yusho even from there.

Hoshoryu broke through, Ozeki sumo on display, got the look , the attitude and now a the Cup.

Looking forward to some proper Ozeki sumo.

p.s. Yeah it almost didn’t happen because of the hand on day 1

If checking our predictions is on the agenda now, I'll try with mine

  • I guess Hokutofuji yusho after the full concentration on this one bout for Hoshoryu

That was a try to jinx him and it worked

Quote

Kanto-sho of course for Hakuoho, maybe more if he wins tomorrow - but they tend to avoid the complex conditions again lately, like "if he also wins the yusho".

Gonoyama and Shonannoumi also can reach the 10 wins - all 3 new makuuchi getting the newcomer sansho would likely be a first - maybe instead of the first ever triple ozeki promotion we get at least this. But Hokutofuij also should get a kanto-sho and Nishikigi if he wins - I doubt they'll hand out 5 of them.

Gino-sho only for Hoshoryu and maybe the shukun-sho scrapped to limit the sansho.

wrong sansho picked for Hakuoho and Hoshoryu, no condition for his 2nd, same with Nishikigi, instead one for Hoshoryu. They didn't hand out 5 kanto-sho, but 6 and were unbelievably more than generous overall.

Shimpan top Sadogatake would like to have all three make it to ozeki this time. He wants to wait till day 15 and hopes for good sumo. https://www.sanspo.com/article/20230707-PSB4RGV6OFJW3GNYQPVLACFNWM/

This means that 32 wins and good sumo will be a sure promotion for all of them. With Takakeisho out, Kirishima, Terunofuji and Asanoyama in pain and not 100% fit, the chances are not bad. Kotonowaka and Abi may spoil it for them, they seem to be in good shape and are ozeki hopefuls as well.

With this constellation, I don't think we'll get a low-end makuuchi yusho again this year, but likely in the runner-up results.

Alas, no chance to check if 32 were enough - at least my initial prediction about the yusho was generally correct, sekiwake yusho, runner-up m9w - the low-end makuuchi as joint 3rd

extra: Takasu really had it right

Support for Hoshoryu and his ozeki run: first class wagyu beef from kensho king Dr. Takasu - he'll get a whole carcass if he makes it

Today Hoshoryu used the new kesho mawashi - it already is one from Takasu for reaching ozeki, presented early ...

The wagyu cattle for Hoshoryu by Takasu should he make it to ozeki - no doubt that Takasu has no doubt that Hoshoryu will succeed

This is spot on! I’d describe this so far as starting (or near the beginning of) a period of strong competition at the top rather than a weak era. I suspect of them will be remembered as historically excellent rikishi, but it feels like a much more exciting period compared to waiting for Hakuho to officially clinch it every basho.

Possibly unpopular opinion on Hoshoryu: he's got some steely determination on the dohyo, but genuinely appears to be a light-hearted guy out of it. I don't expect him to cause the kyokai any PR headaches, despite all the lineage-based concerns.

I suggest Ozekos, as -i is sooo plural...

Keep in mind that here it needs to be in the accusative.

Indeed, golden they are but alas cannot tell the future..

Which reminds me of a lullaby my mother used to sing to me:

There once was a man from Madras

His balls were made out of brass

In stormy weather

They clanged together

And sparks flew out of his ass.

But you put all of your predictions out there and then posted how all those predictions turned out. Most people, including myself, would not make those predictions and then share them. Truly golden.

It's not because I'm that nice-there are people here who would gladly point out my slippiotoshis, but that's part of the fun. I just did it before they could, is all..

I don't think Asahiyutaka would be a particularly fitting shikona for Hoshoryu.

I wouldn't rule out a switch in the shō character though. Taking the full Asashōryū may be a bit much especially as he's not even a member of Takasago beya.

It was going to be a long-overdue yusho whichever way it went, but I can't pretend I'm not disappointed by the outcome - I was hoping for the first Hakkaku-beya yusho since the heya opened nearly 30 years ago. I'm not sure Hokutofuji will get a better chance.

If Hakuoho had won it would've been the first yusho by a shin-nyumaku since Ryogoku in 1914 Natsu.

If Nishikigi hadn't fallen away it would've been Isenoumi-beya's first since Kashiwado in 1967 Nagoya.

Instead, Tatsunami-beya has its first yusho since Wakanami in 1968 Haru.

And on the theme of long-time-since, the last time Kasugano-beya had no rikishi in the Makuuchi division was 1967 Aki, so when Aoiyama was 2-6 I thought the stint was done for. Somehow he produced a seven-bout winning streak to keep it going, at least for a bit longer. The question is, can reinforcements arrive before such magic acts are beyond him?

Tochikamiyama comes to mind- entered Hatsu 2019-  he's been flirting with Juryo for a while now, and he just got a 6-1 at Makushita 32 this basho after three consecutive mks.. Kind of stuck in a rut since September 2020. Maybe he'll do a Shounannoumi. Corresponding with him on Facebook-seems like a really nice guy.

Tochimusashi also comes to mind - started off at  Sandanme tsukedashi 100 in March 2021 but after getting the yusho in his first basho as a sekitori he had a brief unsuccessful Juryo run, and was 2E but went 2-5 this basho.

Tochimaru -  probably too late after 12 years in sumo and a brief 3 basho Juryo stint.

Tsukahara - Maybe the guy with the best prospect - just went 6-1 at 7W and has not been ranked lower than 10 this last year.

Tochiseiryuu  - lost the Makushita yusho  on day 13, from 54W, naah.

Kobayashi - 3 bashos 15-6 career - will be in the bottom half of Sandanme next basho, too early to tell.
