Hokutofuji kind of lost this more than Hōsh won it IMO, he started a pull and Hōshōryū took full adavantage. That said, it's difficult to start yotsu when your opponent is fully committing to oshi, so. Edited July 23, 2023 by Seiyashi

Kaninoyama 1,711 Posted July 23, 2023 (edited) Was hoping Hokutofuji could make the most of his once-in-a-lifetime chance but the moment was too big for him and the most likely result prevailed. Floodgate is now open and it's the first of many more to come for the new Ozeki and future Yokozuna. Edited July 23, 2023 by Kaninoyama
yorikiried by fate 2,001 Posted July 23, 2023 (edited) Hmm, looking at their pre-bout face-expression-scape, that seemed a bit inevitable. Hokutofuji only concerned with himself, Hoshoryu only concerned with his prey. Edited July 23, 2023 by yorikiried by fate

Kaninoyama 1,711 Posted July 23, 2023 In the yusho interview, Hoshoryu was asked how much he was thinking about a potential yusho promotion. He replied: "Not at all. " Yeah, right.
Benihana 1,913 Posted July 23, 2023 Pink macaron, just for the records. Well deserved yusho and promotion for Hoshoryu. A bit disappointed with the other S. They are both at 19 over 2 now, so another Ozeki-promotion after Aki is highly unlikely. I'd almost say, that's the closest to Ozeki, they'll ever get in their career. 1

Seiyashi 4,072 Posted July 23, 2023 I think Wakamotoharu has the style to be able to still get there with a bit more work, but Daieishō is gone. He can't seem to fix his chronic overextension.

Even a promotion after kyushu will not be easy to get. 24/30 needed in aki+kyushu. Kotonowaka looks actually in a better position than them now. 22/30 needed. Akinomaki 40,038 Posted July 23, 2023 The procedure has started: Sadogatake requested the special riji-kai to discuss the promotion and Hakkaku acknowledged - on Wednesday the banzuke compilation conference and the rijikai officially decide and we have the new ozeki Hoshoryu (unless someone urges him to change his name for that) https://www.jiji.com/jc/article?k=2023072300320

RabidJohn 1,721 Posted July 23, 2023 Nishikigi got the shukun-sho - there is justice in the world. Well, Hokuseiho got double digits... Fantastic win by Midorifuji. Hakuoho is astonishingly good for someone so young. He probably won't have a proper mage when he reaches sanyaku. Congratulations to Hoshoryu on yusho no. 1 and ozeki promotion (and commiserations to Hokutofuji). Hoshoryu looked very emotional on his way to the shitaku-beya. I always appreciate being able to see how much it means to them.
hakutorizakura 609 Posted July 23, 2023 What a finish to a fun basho! Hoshoryu deserves it, props to Hokutofuji and Nishikigi, and of course stellar performance from Hakuoho. The bout with Hosh was a bit anticlimax, but that throw by Hosh was the money shot. I would give the best throw of the basho award to Midorifuji though! The boss must be having a mixed feeling after all this. Hakuoho is commendable but Hokuseiho is downright embarrassing Is the Uncle happy? I didn't see any tweet last time I checked.

There's an Omedetō from him, plus a photo of him pulling a funny prank when Hōsh is receiving the cup, by pretending like he's hoisting it too.
Thorbjarn 214 Posted July 23, 2023 Hoshoryu has been progressing quite steadily and still seems to have untapped potential. Therefore I think this was a really good outcome to a very entertaining basho in the grand scheme of things. Sentimentally I would have loved to see Nishikigi win this, but he quite clearly ran out of steam early in the second week. Hats off to Asanoyama for somehow eeking out a kachi koshi with injury and mid-basho absence. I also have to give credit and respect to Aoiyama. He's quite easily my least favourite Rikishi, but this isn't the first time I wrote him off with a big makekoshi and he managed to get back into decent numbers or even kachi koshi.

As for the yusho race, Nishikigi will end 9-6. Houshouryuu yusho (13-2) and the only Ozeki promotion. Endou will be in the race till the end. Hokutofuji 11 wins. Daieishou 10 wins. Wakamotoharu, 11 wins. Kirishima kadoban. Asanoyama 10 wins. Kotonowaka 11 wins. Ochiai 11 wins. Gounoyama is injured (total speculation). He will get kachikoshi. Mitakeumi kachikoshi. Shoudai another 6-9. Hokuseihou kachikoshi. Thank you for watching. Time for reality. Nishikigi will end 9-6 - 10-5 Houshouryuu yusho 13-2--- it was 12-3 Only ozeki promotion- got that right Endou in the race till the end- not really Hokutofuji 11 wins - 12. Daieishou 10 - 9 Wakamotoharu 11 - 9 Kirishima kadoban- right Asanoyama ten wins - 8, but extenuating circumstances Gounoyama kachikoshi- easy Mitakeumi kachikoshi- very wrong Shoudai 6-9? Right Hokuseihou kachikoshi? I guess he made an agreement with Mitakeumi to make me look bad. Tamawashi 10 wins? 8. All in all, not terrible. Not great, but not terrible.
