Nagoya 2023 discussion (results)

We're already at six sansho now, record tied. Nishikigi first sansho after 103 basho is the slowest ever, Hakuoho after 4 the fastest ever.

The last with two sansho on makuuchi debut was fellow Tottori Johoku corporate yokozuna Ichinojo

Edit: the paper counts two sansho for the same person as two people, a maximum of 8 people to get one today - also a result of the ambiguity of the Japanese language, with nin/people being a counter for persons - they rather count people than things, even if it is for the things

More interesting bits about Hakuōhō: he had a connection with Ichinojō, since it was the latter who encouraged him to stay with sumo in junior high after he found the rigours of training too tough.

Was Ochiai Tottori Jōhoku student?

According to Wikipedia, he was a student at Tottori Jōhoku's sister school, Tottori Nishi Junior High, and a member of its sumo club. Presumably the connection came by way of a joint training session or something.

Half a henka by Hokutofuji

It was obvious from his pre-tachiai stance that he was going to move laterally, but I wouldn't call this a henka.

I am sure Hokutofuji wants Hakuoho to win. He has higher chance against a rookie Hakuoho than ultra motivated Ozeki contender Hoshoryu.

Of course, he is from Tottori, where else would he study? And not only student, like Ichinojo he was corporate yokozuna as Tottori Jōhoku staff.

We have 4 sekiwake next basho, and Tobizaru will be komusubi alongside shin-komusubi Nishikigi.

Another great showing by Kotonowaka. He wants to join the Ozeki hopeful parade.

His run has just started, though. He has gone 8-7 and 9-6 in the two basho preceding; he will have to maintain double digits for 2 more basho. He's also only ever gone 11-4 back to back once before, and that in the lower half of makuuchi.

If Hoshoryu loses. If not, Kotonowaka will take his spot.

Technically in that event as S2e he takes no one's spot. Daieishō and Wakamotoharu having scored KKs will move up, and a debutant will always rank lowest.

You are right, I meant "one in - one out".

Asanoyama pulls out a kachi-koshi with one arm. Wakamotoharu's gonna have to wait even longer for an Ozeki run.
