Which is exactly what Asashosakari was saying about Tomokaze fairly recently, to the effect that he would be surprised if Tomokaze became a joi mainstay as everyone was expecting. Kaninoyama 1,694 Posted July 22, 2023 Didn't realize it until now but Hakuoho is fighting from M17. It's a done deal.

He is tied for the lead going into day 15 on his 4th basho. Wow! Just wow!
Katooshu 3,135 Posted July 22, 2023 (edited) That ending was very reminiscent of one of Hakuho's wins over Hokutofuji. Both great counters from very vulnerable spots with Hokuto charging at them. Being able to pull out wins in those situations is one of the signs of an excellent rikishi. Edited July 22, 2023 by Katooshu
Bunbukuchagama 688 Posted July 22, 2023 So, Hokuseiho got his well-deserved smack down the banzuke.
MrGrumpyGills 119 Posted July 22, 2023 Back to the drawing board, I guess. Being freakishly tall and leaning on people until they're worn down only gets you so far.
robnplunder 974 Posted July 22, 2023 (edited) Watching Hokuseiho is more frustrating than watching Ichinojo. Edited July 22, 2023 by robnplunder
Katooshu 3,135 Posted July 22, 2023 (edited) I wish Oho would stop retreating so much - this basho it's like he's doing an Aoiyama impression. He's powerful and can hold his own or better with most on the belt or when aggressively thrusting. Too many times he's just started backpeddling if his initial attack doesn't work immediately. Actually, young Ichinojo took Makuuchi by storm. 13-2 JY and a Sekiwake promotion - Hokuseiho can only dream of such success.

Chartorenji 235 Posted July 22, 2023 10 bout streak for Ryuden, though that last one is about as close as it gets.

Chartorenji 235 Posted July 22, 2023 A henka attempt during the second to last match in an Ozeki run is nuts lmao

Kaninoyama 1,694 Posted July 22, 2023 (edited) Puzzling henka by Wakamotoharu. Even if he wins with it, it does nothing positive for his Ozeki promotion chances. On the other hand, if Hoshoryu wins tomorrow it will be difficult to deny him his well-deserved promotion. Edited July 22, 2023 by Kaninoyama
Akinomaki 39,786 Posted July 22, 2023 (edited) Now they only have to pair Hoshoryu with Hakuoho to ensure a 12 - 3 yusho. Otherwise the 11-4 playoff chance remains. Edited July 22, 2023 by Akinomaki

Funnily enough, the observation regarding Shishi and chaos seems to also strike me regarding Ōhō. For someone with that much interest, he doesn't appear to really have any kind of signature in his sumo other than being generally aggressive.
