Reminiscent of the other two ozeki who took the (late-career) drop to juryo, Miyabiyama and Kotoshogiku, who were also done quickly afterwards. In a way, I think it speaks to all those guys' quality that it took such a massive sudden downturn in health just to get them out of makuuchi, that even juryo immediately became a problem for them. 2 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

In his prime his power was exceptional, and I'll truly miss his yotsu sumo and presence in Ozumo. dingo 1,159 Posted May 19, 2023 Unlike with his recent great rival Ichinojo, I don't think anyone can say we didn't see it coming. His struggles in the last few basho were quite painful to watch, so I'm glad he's finally allowing himself to rest before his body breaks down completely. With Tochinoshin retiring and Aoiyama's age not leaving him much room either, this is really the end of an era for Caucasian rikishi. The bright spot is that hopefully Shishi can finally make it to Juryo and stay there for a while, taking over the symbolic torch so to say. Otsukaresama and good luck, Tochinoshin! Kurowashi 42 Posted May 19, 2023 His intai was obviously in the near future, but it is a bit surprising, that he retires in the middle of a basho. Nevertheless it is still sad news. I was in the Kokugikan Natsu 2018 on day 12 when he beat Hakuho. It was the day i fell in love with sumo and Tochinoshin was right away my favorite rikishi.
