Godango 956 Posted May 18, 2023 A sad, but long overdue decision. Like many, Tochinoshin's resurgence was the story that captured my attention and got me into being a full-fledged sumo fan. The fact he achieved what he did with his injuries is pretty spectacular. A career to be proud of.
Tsuchinoninjin 1,254 Posted May 18, 2023 A yusho and ozeki is a pretty good career. Hopefully his knees can recover somewhat. my Tegata collection is not fairing too well. Out of osunaarashi, Ichinojo, tochinoshin, and endo, only endo is left. I guess this is the endo 1
Rocks 1,807 Posted May 18, 2023 Great career. He did Georgia proud. Good luck to him in his next endeavor. I expected this but figured he'd hang around Juryo longer.

Reminiscent of the other two ozeki who took the (late-career) drop to juryo, Miyabiyama and Kotoshogiku, who were also done quickly afterwards. In a way, I think it speaks to all those guys' quality that it took such a massive sudden downturn in health just to get them out of makuuchi, that even juryo immediately became a problem for them.

Yarimotsu 537 Posted May 19, 2023 Old and broken is sadly how I mostly got to see him. Watching highlights from a decade ago, I would've very much enjoyed his sumo then. Hopefully he can lose the weight now and heal up somewhat. Aoiyama can't be too far behind.

Could someone give a translation of this linked Facebook video? I sure would like confirmation, too. When I Googled Tochinoshin, it showed there was a tweet on twitter that was quoting the original "Agenda" article, but when I clicked on it, the tweet no longer existed. https://twitter.com/AgendaGeorgia/status/1659187170685636608 Edited May 19, 2023 by sumojoann Add link to tweet
specialweek 2 136 Posted May 19, 2023 (edited) Releasing this without official confirmation is concerning. If a rikishi says he is going to retire to a media source there is a precedent where they have been stopped from competing straight away. Tochinofuji 372 Posted May 19, 2023 (edited) My original favourite rikishi (and part of my shikona). I met him once during jungyo in October 2008, and have supported him ever since. In his prime his power was exceptional, and I'll truly miss his yotsu sumo and presence in Ozumo. To come back from the depths to rise again and reach ozeki really was something. 本当にお疲れ様でした! Addendum: alas, the forum won't let me upload my picture with him from the jungyo as it's over 51.2kb, which seems a very low limit... Since everyone has been cheering for me, I (was able to complete my sumo career.) Thank you very much for your support.
dingo 1,179 Posted May 19, 2023 Unlike with his recent great rival Ichinojo, I don't think anyone can say we didn't see it coming. His struggles in the last few basho were quite painful to watch, so I'm glad he's finally allowing himself to rest before his body breaks down completely. With Tochinoshin retiring and Aoiyama's age not leaving him much room either, this is really the end of an era for Caucasian rikishi. The bright spot is that hopefully Shishi can finally make it to Juryo and stay there for a while, taking over the symbolic torch so to say. Otsukaresama and good luck, Tochinoshin! Kurowashi 42 Posted May 19, 2023 His intai was obviously in the near future, but it is a bit surprising, that he retires in the middle of a basho. Nevertheless it is still sad news. I was in the Kokugikan Natsu 2018 on day 12 when he beat Hakuho. It was the day i fell in love with sumo and Tochinoshin was right away my favorite rikishi. I thank him for all the memories and wish him all the best and hope his future is bright.
