Aki jungyo 2023

Recommended Posts

After 4 years there will be an Izumo jungyo again, the 11th, on Oct. 26, the last for Izumo shusshin tate gyoji Shikimori Inosuke, who turns 65 in September next year - usually it took place every 3 years. Inosuke and Furiwake-oyakata (Hochiyama) were in the city hall for the announcement (and the contract) yesterday o

I’ll be at the Matsumoto stop. Glad I’m going to one of the first events, the poor lads are going to be knackered by the end of it.

It's not hip, it's one of his vertebrae.

Auto-translate confused a lot of people. :-)

The quotes make it sound like a mess. Diabetes messes up bone growth. Always painful to read details of his condition and I’m glad it’s not me.

Where did you get this information from? No article mentions exactly which bone of the lower back has a fracture and all indicate the hipbone

From people whose Japanese is better than mine. :-)

Also, it was reported that he showed the reporters the exact location of a separated bone fragment in his spine on his phone.

It seems like a vertebrae bone because the exchange was:

照ノ富士は「これ見る?」と、スマホに保存していたエックス線写真を見せながら「これ折れてる」と説明。「中のスポンジみたいなところもつぶれてる」と話した。

And if he is calling the 椎間板 by スポンジみたいなところ then it would make most sense if its the vertebrae that has a fracture. But, I guess the reporters aren't really confident in their understanding so no attempt to explain further...

Of course it could also be just 骨髄 he is referencing, who the hell knows.

Usually mine is better than that of those people

Yes, but the photo of his x-ray that he showed was neither shown, nor was reported which bone it was -  only 腰骨の一部が折れていた

Of course the other bones in that region also count as bones of the hip in Japanese, but hipbone is what was reported and no further detail.

He was kyujo because of hernia related problems, a fracture at the vertebrae seems likely thus, but so far this wasn't reported.

I read that, and if I read sponge I think of bone marrow and not a disk

Of course, anybody is free to believe that he just performed a dohyo-iri with a broken hip. :-D

Who told you that anything was said about a broken hip? A fracture at the hip, a tiny piece split off.

When you want to say in Japanese that you have back pain, you say your hip aches. Back problems are hip problems. I had hernia problems already during my 2nd stay in Japan in the nineties, my level of Japanese then was still only at the level of those people with a better than yours.

Hovever when you want to say you have problems at the hip, you also just say you have hip problems. And without further details, you can't say what actually was said. That's the main principle about understanding Japanese, you don't have to say it clearly, you can keep it vague.

If you want to put that into English, you are forced to pick a more precise meaning. If you simply translate, you get where your people are. I specialise in understanding, not translating.

The treatment was not enough to have Terunofuji join from the start, though he did the dohyo-iri again afterwards at the Meiji-jingu tournament, and won't have to do more at the jungyo either. Next treatment tomorrow, he will decide about joining the jungyo later after more treatment tries

I heard Shishi is joining the jungyo; since it was reported specifically, should we assume Juryo rikishi are still not included by default?

Definitely, especially since there was no juryo rikishi on the kyujo list. 7 juryo will be replacing the 7 on the list.

Another jungyo marathon has started, 22 opportunities for more injuries, with less rest while being on the move all the time and from one unaccustomed lodging to the next. But - last basho only Asanoyama had his yusho chances ruined by that.

Today after 5 years again the completely unnecessary location of Ota ward in Tokyo - the sole reason for the jungyo is to bring sumo to the regional locations, which otherwise have none.

Takakeisho wisely only did the basics and like the other 2 ozeki did not take part in keiko bouts: "All of a sudden going onto the dohyo leads to injury: after putting the body back into form"

Under protective glass covers so people can't get their paws all over them and rub off the luster.
