He got his KK last basho while nursing an injury, 12 years in sumo slaving in makushita for 8 of them. With Tamawashi obviously injured and maybe closer to retirement, he looks like he will be leading the 3 rikishi heya for years to come, although he is already 30 years old. Anyhow, he's been doing great sumo. You'd think having a two time Yusho winner would entice some more recruits to join.

rhyen 1,842 Posted May 20, 2023 These past 2 days have seen the Asanoyama fan club turn out in droves. Yesterday, I counted about 80 towels, mainly on the West side Masu Seki seats. Today, there are at least 150 towels in the masu seki seats on all four side. Add in at least another 70 towels upstairs in the chair seats.

Akinomaki 40,670 Posted May 20, 2023 Kawazoe's leg is regenerating each time - only one last time necessary now. The G7 are too early to stay till day 15, if the Natsu basho President's cup is still awarded remains to be seen, usually just by some embassy employee. I started with Tochinoshin's reascension, but I sure as hell aren't retiring. Just very pooped and lurking these few bashos as a result because life events. I haven't had the time to watch any sumo this basho, that's how bad it is. I'll try and brush up fast for the PDY thread, but I'll be getting it up on Day 10 preferably. Apropos of that, if Chiyonokuni also retires as someone else suggested in Tochinoshin's retirement thread, then that'll be a bonanza for makushita. RabidJohn 1,825 Posted May 20, 2023 Is Kiribayama injured? Or is all that going-backwards sumo just Kakuryu being a bad influence? Either way, I'm more impressed with Daieisho's and Wakamotoharu's sumo so far this basho. I've a feeling Kinbozan joined a very limited-membership club today - of rikishi who've fought yokozuna before they had a chance to grow a proper oicho-mage. Glad that Terunofuji was fit enough to give him a proper welcome to the musubi no ichiban!
dingo 1,267 Posted May 20, 2023 Abi has got to be badly injured, he's mostly henkaing and moving backwards. Shodai A showed up in full force today against Kiribayama, who once again resorted to reverse gear. (yes, I'm unashamedly nicking Kintamayama's excellent Kaisei description). Despite all his limping, hobbling and other troubles, Takakeisho is now 5-2, Not bad for someone who should be at home resting. Likewise Terunofuji has made it to 7-0 already without too much difficulty. Let's see what's ahead.

With a good chance 9 will get it for him and 10 wins being a lock he's doing everything he can to not lose it as opposed to going out and winning it.

Tochinofuji 387 Posted May 20, 2023 I have to say, despite being a big Wakatakakage supporter, it seems I really have been sleeping on Wakamotoharu. I've been very impressed with his sumo thus far this basho.

Wakamotoharu's rise has been slower than his brother's but quite steady.

There hasn't been a modern Ozeki promotion with 9 wins in the final basho. Unless something extremely unusual happens, double digits are a must.

In addition, the promotion-committee head (I forgot who it is) made it clear at the start of the basho that the content would also be a factor. So far I'd say that that content hasn't been impressive even in his wins, so he'd better pick that part up as well if he wants a drama-free promotion. At 27 Kiribayama isn't exactly a youngster either.

Even ignoring precedent and the fact that Hakkaku said he needs 10, 9 would mean he drops 4 of his final 8 bouts, which won't look good. Just for the record, I hope and expect he'll get 10. The content part seems like a usual half-empty kyokai statement, since they can't exactly say that ozeki doesn't have to do ozeki-like sumo. I expect the content part will be hand-waved once he gets enough wins.
