Katooshu 3,176 Posted May 28, 2023 (edited) Well that was the most enjoyable basho for me in a while - the high rankers in makuuchi and juryo really delivered, we had up and comers securing their sekitori debuts in style, and we had a debuting amateur great show his power after a shaky start. Benihana 1,910 Posted May 28, 2023 Nishikigi just managed to win 8 consecutive bouts for the first time in his career. He beat 1O, 1S and 2K, that's somehow impressive.
Benihana 1,910 Posted May 28, 2023 The US President's Cup was awarded. It may be tall, but compared to the Emperor's Cup, it seems to be a light weight, just like the guy handing it over the first time.
Jakusotsu 5,866 Posted May 28, 2023 (edited) This is only the third time in this millennium that a Maegashira with 12 wins and a jun-yusho gets no sansho. Must be a former-Ozeki-thing, although Tochinoshin has been a future-former-Ozeki at that time. Edited May 28, 2023 by Jakusotsu

RabidJohn 1,715 Posted May 28, 2023 (edited) I don't recall ever seeing a four-sekiwake score line like that before. They're all on ozeki runs next time, except Kiribayama obviously. Nor do I recall seeing shukun-sho and gino-sho being dished out, but no kanto-sho That pick-him-up, throw-him-down move Hoshoryu did on Kiribayama was one of his uncle's, no? Btw, I Googled Hoshoryu to check his recent scores. I went back to Google, typed 'd' and Daieisho came up immediately. Went back again and Wakamotoharu came up without me typing anything... Hakuryuho 334 Posted May 28, 2023 Kiribayama promoted to Ozeki, Hoshoryu/Wakamotoharu and Daieisho needing 12 and 11 wins in Nagoya respectively to be promoted themselves... The rank of Ozeki might become crowded again rather soon. (And we're not even talking about Ochiai and Onosato who seem to be on a Ozeki trajectory at the least) Sumo's future is looking bright! Only time I ever saw Chiyonofuji look like he was losing his rag. He could've easily put Terao out with okuri dashi, but instead decided to pick him up and slam him down. Akinomaki 40,022 Posted May 28, 2023 Top shimpan Sadogatake has started the promotion process for Kiribayama, it's called definite now: he requested the special rijikai from Hakkaku that will decide the promotion, so far every time in favor, and the request was granted. This rijikai is on the 31st combined with the banzuke compilation conference, which also decides the promotion. http://www.sanspo.com/article/20230528-JQRKFX4PQFIYBJ2RPVNPBQ5MIM/ He also confirmed that the other 3 sekiwake after their 2nd double digit results in a row in sanyaku next basho all are on an official ozeki run. http://www.jiji.com/jc/article?k=2023052800446&g=spo
