I think that's what he tried - it looked to me like he pulled a hit and shift, trying to get a hand on the belt while at it - except Teru was prepared for it and was able to clamp him before he could get going. Last should have been the Hanada brothers, right? Yep. And of course I couldn't help but to look up to all the historical precedents. We have: 1998.05 - 2000.03 Takanohana II & Wakanohana III (Futagoyama) 1987.05 - 1991.05 Chiyonofuji & Hokutoumi (Kokonoe) 1948.10 - 1949.10 Maedayama & Azumafuji (Takasago) 1941.05 - 1945.11 Futabayama & Haguroyama (Tatsunami) 1924.01 - 1925.05 Tochigiyama & Tsunenohana (Dewanoumi) 1918.02 - 1923.01 Onishiki & Tochigiyama (Dewanoumi) Moreover, there was an "almost there" moment for Nishinoumi I & Konishiki I (Takasago) in 1896.01/03, as the former retired and the latter was elevated to Yokozuna to fill his place. They were unfortunately active in a period in which there was a de facto rule to have only one Yokozuna at a same time (1835-1903), so they could not hold the rank together.

mt fuji 976 Posted May 24, 2023 If you have time to kill, the Asanowaka - Dewanojo match was odd and fun to watch if you can find it. I saw that Asanowaka pulled a susoharai so I dug through Karla's stream to find it

I think he's been close to defeating Terunofuji before so he really should've come up with a better plan. Perhaps Terunofuji's long absence dulled Hoshoryuu's memory or something. He will get his KK and I'm not suggesting he is bad but he is 7-4 with 2 fusen wins and none against anyone with a winning record this basho. He has not looked as sure footed as he usually does this basho and I gave him minimal chance of beating Teronufuji last night.

Rocks 1,807 Posted May 25, 2023 I don't think Ura actually won that match so much as Tobizaru as the first to collapse from exhaustion.
Kaninoyama 1,694 Posted May 25, 2023 (edited) Ura zubuneri win against Tobizaru in what might be the match of the basho so far. Even Konosuke couldn't contain his excitement, screaming out about 1000 nokottas in the space of a minute. Edited May 25, 2023 by Kaninoyama 2

Rocks 1,807 Posted May 25, 2023 Not sure I agree with that decision. Maybe a redo but Nishkigi was in an unrecoverable position as a result of Kotonwaka's throw.
