2 Former Ozeki and 4 Yusho Winners in Juryo at once, has this ever happened?

EDIT: This is the first basho with 2 former ozeki in juryo at once, not sure about the yusho winners bit.

The only former Ozeki to fall into Juryo and not retire that basho in the modern era were Miyabiyama(baseball gambling suspension), Terunofuji, and Asanoyama. Interesting to see what Tochinoshin does if he can't immediately make it back up.

I still don't understand the logic. They wouldn't put Hoshoryu ahead of Wakatakakage 2 months ago, but now they are fine with this?

Since Kotonowaka was K1w last basho, he is merely staying the same rank while he's jumped by Wakamotoharu (K2w last basho), whereas putting Hoshoryu ahead of Wakatakakage would have been a demotion for Wakatakakage.

That or of course they could have some Onami bias ;-)

I'm glad that sanity prevailed concerning Hokuseiho and Asanoyama.

Getting this right got me exactly zero GTB points, as I did not see him going up anywhere near that high.

Eight shikona changes on this banzuke, all for rikishi switching from their family names.

Half of the changes are for rikishi of Yamahibiki-beya. Moji is now Daishoryu, the Great Rising Dragon. Tanimoto is now Kassho, which means to soar (or glide) through the air. Akisada is now Harimao, that one no doubt a tribute to his home prefecture Hyogo, part of which was Harima Province before Meiji. Finally, Masutani is now Shinseido.

A pair of changes from Takekuma-beya, again the first kanji from the shisho (former Ozeki Goeido) is bestowed. Okano is now Gohakuun (white cloud), while Negishi gets a more standard shikona, Gonowaka.

Lastly to Ajigawa-beya, and that shisho (former Sekiwake Aminishiki) also bestows the first kanji from his own shikona (er, and the heya name too of course). His nephew Sakuraba is now Anzakura, while Iima becomes Agora.

Ms58e Moji > Daishoryu (大昇龍,  だいしょうりゅう)
Sd76w Tanimoto > Kassho (滑翔,  かっしょう)
Jd34e Okano > Gohakuun (豪白雲,  ごうはくうん)
Jd44e Akisada > Harimao (播磨皇,  はりまおう)
Jd55e Masutani > Shinseido (信正道,  しんせいどう)
Jd68w Negishi > Gonowaka (豪乃若,  ごうのわか)
Jd99w Sakuraba > Anzakura (安櫻,  あんざくら)
Jk15e Iima > Agora (安強羅,  あごうら)

No given name changes at all this time.

Very happy to see the return of that. I always felt that prefix was a much more distinctive calling card than the -fuji that his home stable switched to when it changed name from Ajigawa to Isegahama.

Oh, that's a first by far. Two former yusho winners in Juryo were the previous high-score. Twice in 2000 (May and July), courtesy of Kotonishiki and Mitoizumi. Then once more in January 2022 with Tokushoryu and Asanoyama on the way down. The combo of Asanoyama and Tokushoryu provides five six more instances of two former Makuuchi yusho winners being ranked at Juryo or lower. That four former winners are ranked outside of Makuuchi has never happened before (three also never happened).

Does he plan to win by taking advantage of his opponent's fears of public spaces?

Tochinoshin was kyujo at the recent sekitori photo shoot, more likely to drop to makushita immediately than going back up.

Absolute Murderers' Row at the top of juryo. Good luck Ochiai!

I don't believe he will match up against the majority of them.

I see on the official JSA website, Hokuseiho seems to have grown another 4cm, now listed at 204cm.

we gonna have a fun time in Makushita. Ishizaki, Kiryuko, Fujiseiun, Kawazoe, Hatsuyama, Kanzaki, Mukainakano, Hitoshi, and Miyagi all in the extended joi, with more experienced prospects like Mineyaiba, Dewanoryu, Shishi, and a Tsukahara only needing 4 wins as well. Then you got veterans like a (hopefully) hungry Salt Bae, Tochimaru, Yago, and Kaisho all hoping to make it back to Juryo. Just a really good set of Rikishi.

Miyabiyama's last demotion in 2013 was not baseball-gambling related though. He gave it a last try and busted. Number's wise, Asanoyama's stay in Juryo makes sense, but sumo-wise I'd rather see a possible Yusho contender racking up wins against lower rankers, than see strong but somewhat slow-tachiai Hokuseiho trying to adapt to the speed of the big show.

I can't be arsed to look it up, but IIRC Myabiyama's non-retirement in 9-2010 cued a few verbal eyebrows being raised on the forum (unwritten rule and such), with swift rebukes by others (exceptional circumstances) quietening the waves rapidly.

One could argue though, that it was another tiny hair in the ultra-traditionalists' soups, that they have seen to build up to a decent cat's hairball over time.

Well yes, but he did retire the basho he got demoted in(in the sense that he was not competing the next basho). Which I think is a useful comparison for Tochinoshin, if he can't recover in time to compete and get repromoted to Makuuchi.

I'm actually a lot more interested to see Hokuseiho in Makuuchi than see Asanoyama fraud his way to a yusho after getting to spend the first 10 days fighting lower rankers. It would be kinda dumb for a punishment to also end up rewarding him with a hugely increased chance to yusho. Hopefully after a 15-0 they move him well into the middle maegashira and then start him on joi-level opposition early.

Fighting lower rankers might be a small advantage but given the huge disadvantage of being unable to fight in his prime for a rather extended period of time against a not superbly strong field, is like getting 5 box after losing 50. So not a great deal IMHO even if we consider he brought that on himself.

From J2w there's a slim chance that Tochinoshin could hang on for another juryo tournament even if he's full kyujo. Of course the results both at the bottom of juryo and at the top of makushita will have to cooperate for that.
