Kensho Haru 2023

Recommended Posts

The basho has about 1600 kensho planned, likely with those planned for Terunofuji, so it will be much less in the end. Last year 1494 were planned, so it should be more in the end than then. Most individual kensho of course are for Takakeisho in his semi-home basho, 190. http://www.sanspo.com/article/20230310-WVGBO7INSZKWBIF7KUGWDHJ5UM/

Plus always in the last bout, so 500 are in reach

8 new sponsors this time

New kensho

Kyoto Plaza Hotels for their onsen resort https://shirahama-kachofugetsu.com/2023/03/10/花鳥風月が大相撲に/

Always on the last bout, so practically another for Takakeisho

Bad luck for Asanoyama that 10 bouts had more kensho placed, usually 4 kensho on day 1 are enough for the rankings. Takakeisho won't reach 500 in his present form, Shodai on 2 is a very rare event.

Good luck for Asanoyama in that there were four kensho on the first bout in the Top Division.  Usually, there is only one!  (Of course, occasionally there are more.). But, what was interesting was that faithful oozumo sponsor, Nagatanien, put three kensho prizes on the bout.  Absolutely no doubt that they were supporting Asanoyama rather than his opponent Mitoryu!

Seems like Moderna is down to one kensho per day now, on different rikishi

Those with TKKS wins now on (1,) 2, 3 and 5  - Mitakeumi with a jump from outside to 5, only Takayasu is earning simply his own kensho

We're entering uncharted territory - a new face to finish first this basho: the 3 sekiwake from now on share the big bunches in the last bout, an excellent incentive for Wakatakakage to get kachikoshi after all and become the biggest kensho earner this basho

There will likely be big jumps now every day, I guess we'll have the most even distribution of kensho ever this basho. Kiribayama is not yet in the rankings, he mustn't blow his big pack chance tomorrow.

Kiribayama replaced Wakatakakage, though he had 7 kensho. Wakatakakage really profited from many kensho getting redistributed to his bout on day 7, Hoshoryu had quite a bunch on day 8, but today it was a medium pack in the last bout and tomorrow as well: apparently many sponsors have withdrawn their kensho, it will be interesting to see how low the total will be in comparison to the planned 1600.

Wakatakakage failed to get the medium biggest pack of the day, rare to have a winner from the last bout not move into the rankings at this stage. Will Midorifuji get in there at all, how far down will Takakeisho be in the end, will anybody reach 100 kensho, will the basho see the lowest top finisher this century?

Hoshoryu is the only one with a really big pack among the sekiwake, but maybe because it was against Endo. He is almost ensured to finish top now, twice as much as the 2 other sekiwake contenders. Tomorrow another final bout big bunch in reach vs. Kiribayama. Wakatakakage was just outside the rankings and likely is in safe now for the rest of the basho.

It doesn't look like Midorifuji will make it into the rankings, Ura and Mitakeumi should be just outside - the lower end will be above 50 in the end, but not much - the other 2 sekiwake still have the chance to join Hoshoryu above 100

Today Ichinojo had one extra kensho from a construction company in the first bout, the same two as on day 5, yesterday Asanoyama like on day 1 had 3 extra from Nagatanien, but he failed to get them - Oho has no personal kensho and was happy to get 4 in that bout. Oshoma on day 11 only had the 1 fix from Mochikichi. Shonannoumi got one from the NSK-Tozaikai, he was in the 2nd bout on day 6, tomorrow he's in the first - no kensho are listed on the torikumi web sheet for day 14, like in the past, hopefully just a miss.

No data from the NSK anymore, also tomorrow, maybe they dropped that service for good. Nikkan seems to have counted on that as well, they were very late in posting the results this time. No-one can catch Hoshoryu now, the Daieisho-Kiribayama last bout will definitely have enough kensho to bring Kiribayama above 100 if he wins, else Endo might even finish 2nd, likely a first for him and his best result ever. Funny that Nikkan dropped Kiribayama behind Takakeisho again - both joint 3rd now of course. Takakeisho definitely will drop to (maybe joint) 4th place. Daieisho with a win will jump above Takakeisho, likely above Endo, but it remains to be seen if there will be enough kensho in the final bout for that if Endo wins against Abi - sponsors have lost interest in the basho. Shonannoumi today only had the standard Mochikichi kensho.

There were enough kensho in the Hoshoryu bout for Takayasu to jump from just outside the rankings above Takakeisho to 4th place - so the ozeki finishes 5th. 41 kensho in the last bout - that would have brought Daieisho above 100, now he ends up last in the top 10 - the bottom above 60, the top below 150

Day 15

145:    Hoshoryu
120:    Kiribayama
86:    Endo
80:    Takayasu
79:    Takakeisho
