That's literally Great (大) Mountain (山) Phoenix (鵬), basically Taiho plus 'mountain', perhaps the most popular kanji in sumo. Sure, that's just because the locals didn't try very hard in naming their volcano ("I guess 'Big Mountain' will do"), but if I were Ochiai I'd take it. 42 minutes ago, Seiyashi said: https://www.twitter.com/SumoFollower/status/1637381021405442048 No primary source, but Herouth claims Hakuhō wants Ochiai to be Hakuhō II. A bit too much, isn't it? Perhaps if the boy gets the Ozeki rank he could get it, but right now it would be too soon. Also, this would mean that Hakuho expects Ochiai to be his best pupil, which implies no Nakamura at Miyagino. Actually, if word of it ever got to Nakamura himself, he could look for revenge and move to the court of the only oyakata with some Hakuho sweat under his belt, i.e. Kisenosato. What if the future of sumo will be a rivalry between Hakuho II vs. Kisenosato II? Edited March 19, 2023 by Hankegami

Perhaps it will go down the same way as Wakanohana I and Wakanohana II. The 2nd Waka got the prestigious shikona only when he became yokozuna, even though he wasn't blood related to his stablemaster the 1st Waka. If that's Hakuho's vision, will Ochiai get a "temporary" shikona before he gets promoted to the highest rank(s)? Edited March 19, 2023 by Chiyotasuke
