Congrats to Kiribayama. One thing from Moti's highlight videos from this basho that stood out was that there were so many "Never Met" and "Never Before Met" each day. We're truly into a new era of Ozumo!

Congrats to Kiribayama, continuing the parade of new yusho winners!

I guess Daieisho stuck to his tried and true strong oshi today mainly because this is what works for him and had brought him here, to another potential yusho. Kiribayama on the other hand exploited that very well, although with the unfortunate optics of grabbing the yusho with backpedalling sumo. But I suppose the Kyokai won't pay too much attention cause they need more ozeki soon and Kiribayama has distinguished himself with well rounded sumo. That bout with Hoshoryuu especially is one to remember.

Very nice second half this basho! One of the most boring first half with one of the most interesting second half!

Wow Asanoyama really made something out of nothing there with Ochiai. I wish Ichinojo had a more formidable opponent and we could have seen another Ichinojo v. Asanoyama.... but great action in Juryo today!

It certainly was, with some more amazing sumo from Enho v Hakuyozan. That's the most excited the crowd have been this basho, great to be able to hear the oohs and aahs once again.

What a great end to the basho, though I must admit it's the first time I've seen a yusho kettei-sen decided by a mono-ii.

Chiyotaikai v Wakanohana in Hatsu 1999 was quite something - a kettei-sen with a torinaoshi.

Also down in juryo it was interesting to see how Churanoumi broke Daiamami's grip.

He did this by reaching behind himself, feeling for Daiamami's little finger, and prising it away from his mawashi.

I've never seen this done before. It was successful in breaking the grip but seems pretty likely to cause an injury to me.

Methinks Hosh is a bit too interested in the alpha male stare downs. He should concentrate on emulating his uncle's winning ways before he emulates his other traits. Takayasu's face after he gave him that hearty throw was classic

It shows how Takayasu can perform at the end of a basho, when the pressure isn't on him.

I agree with those who said boring first half, followed by exciting finish. The last couple of days have been great to watch. I rooted for Kiribayama on the final day, but didn't expect him to beat Daieisho twice in the same way! I thought Kiribayama would be one with the nerves.

Natsu basho is going to be very exciting. We will have two sekiwake with very legitimate ozeki chances, needing 10 and 11 wins respectively. Even Wakamotoharu has an outside chance, although he would need an outstanding basho. Hoshoryu has a chance in theory, but is more likely on square 2 in Natsu, starting another ozeki run with this basho's 10-5. He is the youngest of the bunch and I think he gets there eventually.

After 10 days and 8-2 I thought Kotonowaka would be a real ozeki contender after senshuraku. But instead he finished 1-4, losing a couple of bouts he should normally win and having some close calls. So he is stuck in his komusubi slot for now. Probably a future ozeki though.

Poor S1e Wakatakakage...

Sad to see Mitakeumi still a shadow of his former self. One KK following his ozeki promotion, then 6 straight MKs. What happened?

Could this be a long covid effect? He's had an awful time over many months.

Hokuseiho hung around again nicely today to finish off a respectable 9-6 makuuchi debut.

And had he won just one more bout in this basho they would have had to award Hokuseiho the Fighting Spirit Prize. The word "oxymoron" comes to mind. (Thinkingindepth...)

Ichinojo-Asanoyama was only the 2nd most popular bout of the basho, in the most viewed videos on the NHK site, no.1 in the top 10 with again only Asanoyama bouts was A.-Shonanoumi, the Ochiai bout is not (yet) in the top 10 - maybe later, no.10 is vs Tohakuryu now. The other loss, vs Oho is no.5, the first bout in makuuchi vs Mitoryu is no. 4 - so at least we have 2 makuuchi bouts in the top 10 this time.

Even Ochiai's 10-5 is a fantastic score considering two of his losses were to Ichinojō and Asanoyama, and he damn near beat those two either. It's worth pointing out that had Asanoyama and Ichinojō been in makuuchi this basho, 12-3 would have lifted the jūryō yūshō.

What was Hoshoryu thinking with the stare downs and trying to intimidate Takayasu? The last thing he wanted to do was get Takayasu interested in the match. He's 1-6 against Takayasu.

Well he has some attitude, the guy is Mongolian macho braddah!

His other 3 losses: he got surprised an pulled down by Tamashoho, who managed that against no less than Asanoyama two basho again, lost to Atamifuji while fighting with one arm, and lost to 11-4 Gonoyama. I expect quite a battle between those two in May.

Really happy for Kiribayama. He has what it takes to be an Ozeki and hopefully a long lasting one, unlike the las ones. As others already pointed out, both Mongolian Sekiwake are clear Ozeki candidates and I think it's only a matter of time.

Let me congratulate Takarafuji as well. He was destined to Juryo after a 2 -7, but he managed to regroup to win six straight bouts. This last one is a fine example of his habilities: composure, rock-solid perseverance and a great awareness when pushed against the tawara.

The cream rose to the top in the last five days. The two best wrestlers in the tournament squared off for the yusho and the better man won. Daieisho did his style of sumo, and you can't blame him for that, but Kiribayama read him like a book and countered brilliantly.

KBY is the best healthy wrestler in the game: he's relatively young, can fight oshi or yotsu, hasn't missed a bout in 7 years, has gone JY and Y in the last 2 basho and he has good looks and charisma just to put the cherry on the cake. Yes he only has 31 wins in the last 3 basho but I think they should at least consider ozeki promotion right now.

I think the days of giving anyone who gets ten wins on debut a Kantosho are in the past - there have been several examples of this not happening in more recent times.

Every single rikishi since 2011 got one (15 instances including Kinbozan).

I was just going to make the same point but Reonito is a bit quicker on the draw than I am...

And in the 2011 example Shohozan and Myogiryu missed out with 10 wins, but Aoiyama scooped the prize with an 11-4.

Next basho we'll have 11 Yusho winners in Makuuchi and another 1 in Juryo and 1 in Makushita... for a total of 13 former Yusho winners still active. So now I wonder what is the greatest number of active past Yusho winners?

Forgot that Tokushoryu is droping to Makushita

Heh, my definition of more recent times goes back to 2009 and Wakakirin... I thought there were more but probably misremembered.
