The end?

It'd be a huge shame if the channel got shut down, it's probably the only way to watch a lot of specific matches and basho. I've downloaded all the videos on there (I think anyway) as a backup, have you got a backup at all Kinta?

Yes, I do.

Since Kintamayama is a known name in the sumo world, isn't there anybody inside or close the NSK who could ask the head-honchos to leave you alone, if it gets worse? Not tell, just humbly ask?

I doubt anyone there gives a hoot about me or my channel. I know of about 5-6 Kyokai members who know my channel and even watch it, especially some of the retired guys/now oyakata who like to watch their old matches.

Maybe they are becoming more proactive since they have launched the official YouTube channel and a English equivalent channel?

They just went for a blanket strike without bothering to check the contents. Shame, since they are not doing this stuff themselves, as they don't really care about foreign fans. But we all know that..

How does international copyright work anyways? Are Japan's copyright laws more strict than U.S. or is there an equivalent 'fair use' there too?

In the event of differences does Youtube 'goodwillingly' go with the more strict? (I don't think U.S. law requires them too?)

If there's any poppycock regarding Youtube infractioning something that is totally kosher (this has happened to me before) then at least there are always more 'copyleft' platforms out there.

YouTube's copyright system is terrible and heavily favours the 'striker', enabling the abuse of copyright strikes. Fighting for the survival of videos or even the channel as a whole becomes a headache for many popular channels, even when all claims are completely baseless.

A friend with a fairly large channel had some rando with 35 subscribers copy all their videos and upload them on their own channel, then file copyright strikes on the original videos and had them taken down (from the person who created them!), and it took months to resolve, with no penalty for the user who stole the content and initiated the mess.

One strike isn't actually that bad, but I feel for anyone who has to deal with the situation.

The only part I'm still unclear on is how I'm supposed to pin any of this on that Buckton fellow?

Twitch sucks for archive purposes.

Well, nhk has let me be mostly. Let's hope that continues and I'll steer away from the kyokai channel for now and hope for the best.

Any old acquaintances from back then, who got some tattoos in the meantime and could have...a little talk...with the bigwigs? No?

I'm trying to put pressure on Hoshihikari who is still on good terms with Hakkaku and can talk to him directly but I don't think he understands the significance.

I don't really know how it all works but a few of the Facebook pages with YouTube channels are constantly under fire. Inside Sports Japan keeps trying to shut down anyone using even a single  Gunning photo even after the photo has been removed. Katrina Watts was very upset as she inadvertently shared a photo of herself to be used for an interview and immediately they tried to shut down the channel using it.

People seem to have been successful when they appeal and call their bluff on the threatened  legal action. The complainant then has a certain amount of time to show evidence that they have commenced legal action. If they don't then it turns into a strike against the complainant. (I could be wrong with some of this but that is my understanding from people who have tried to keep their channels alive)

Apparently YouTube has a fair use policy that allows certain images to be nicked but that doctrine doesn't apply to Japan where copyright laws have just been tightened.

It’s unlikely any human issued that strike.

Most are just from content detection software that had its library added to.

Forget about the foreign fans for a moment, NSK does not do anything for local fans too. I really like how this guy over here presents short clips of bouts. This is what I need due to limited time I have most of the days.

and if you could see the reactions and comments on his clips the majority comes from Japanese fans/supporters. At this time, if you were working a 9 to 5 job, you cannot watch the broadcast and there is no option to view shorts or digests even if you were based in Japan.

J-League (the top Japanese football championship) has a good YouTube channel where they have short videos from each game without commentary and with pure and clear sound as if you were on around the pitch, so it is really cool. Why NSK could not implement such a broadcast and/or digests?

YouTube has basically no staff for this. If someone complains about copyright, then you get a strike. To reverse that you need to go beyond just saying "fair use" or even "public domain"; YT doesn't care and doesn't have time to check. By and large you need to show that the strike request was malicious and fraudulent. If it really came from someone who looks like they probably do own the copyright then as far as YT is concerned that's the end of it.

YT is one of those modern Internet companies who's business model is "If we did this right/well we would go bust, so we'll do it badly and make money".

Isn't there the official app which you can use to watch the fights?

As far as I know it's limited to users in East Asia. No use at all to people like me in the UK.

As someone up-thread said: it's as if NSK doesn't want Sumo to spread. I know they may have a perception that they would have to do localisations and stuff but really, if you want to watch Sumo you'll probably not worry about the language issue at least while watching the matches themselves.

Seems like you got lucky. Nattosumo's channel was just struck down out of nowhere. Really bad day for western sumo if this is permanent, as he was the only one getting non live recordings of all Makushita bouts.

Natto got hit as I viewed last nights coverage, the moment the video was done and I switched to the juryo, the video it didn’t work anymore. That really sucks. I hope everything stays right with your content kinta! Good luck!

Switched to Nattosumo2 and goes on, like with previous strikes
