The end?

Not just on YT, also his posts on ex-Tw. announcing links get blocked shortly after - hopefully more people turn their back on these sites and use platforms more friendly to human culture

I think you need to cheer up a bit and stop repeating these depressing words. You have sumo and music, that should be enough to cure any dark thought

Depression? Me? Not even close- I'm just letting off some steam amongst friends. If I stop doing the vids it won't be because I'm depressed- it will be because i will no longer feel it is fun. So far, far from it.

I'm happy to hear that you are not depressed and that your legs are intact.  It just sounded that way to me.  You are undoubtedly  feeling a wide range of emotions, anger or even rage being possibilities.  I don't mean to put words into your mouth, even though I guess I am.  You gave your all to your work.  Please know that there are more people than you may realize who love you for what you have done.  It was not for  nothing.....and not in vain.  Your videos ignited my passion for sumo.....others have said the same.....and your videos were also funny as hell!  I will never forget you.....or them.

EDIT TO ADD --- Pardon me for speaking in the past tense.  Maybe I should change everything to the present tense.  I want to but I'm not sure what the future holds.

Not really- I guess disappointment at NHK for going after us. But they closed my old channel down a while ago and any frustration I may have had is long gone. As I stated, as long as I'm enjoying doing these, I will continue..And thank you all for the kind words- feedback is always good.

Natto is giving up on Youtube for good. 'Twas to be expected, I guess.

Thankfully there's no shortage of other platforms, which work just as well despite being less familiar.

I watched Natto just due to the little personality things he'd do. Really sucks to see him go, but I'll try to follow him through to Rumble (If I cannot get sucked into slapping or politics lmao) or wherever they go

I'm happy to let those bits fly over my head. My biggest gripe with Rumble is how unoptimised the video player is on Android.

No YouTube/Twitch-like system in which tapping either side jumps a few seconds, so we really have to drag the scrollbars to jump either way, and it's so small and finicky it's almost impossible to get to the right place & often decides to restart the video from the beginning.

If far from my PC and forced to watch the previous day's makushita bouts on my phone, I go into Twitch's VoDs instead.

The only time I watch anything on a video site is the live stream of sumo on my smartphone, when I'm not at the PC - everything else is a downloaded video, and yt-dlp gets me from Rumble without options the best quality in .mp4, faster and easier than from YT and in slightly better quality. I only have to use the same command each day: get the first 3 videos on the channel - if the channel changes each day, even that gets tedious

What makes Natto indispensable for me is

  1. original Japanese commentary - he's the only NHK source left (I only watch with English commentary if there's no other coverage)
  2. not only makuuchi digest, also juryo and even all of makushita
  3. superior video quality

Twitch and Bilibili are slower and/or have lower (free) quality

With MPC-BE (no more VLC) I can skip though the videos and actually manage to watch all top 3 divisions on the same day - on most days

Edit: Rumble didn't have makushita the other day and today the free quality went down: Odyssee is the place to get natto now: same quality, nearly as fast

Watched his Day 9 video on YT today, he still seems to be around for the moment at least, as NattoSumo482.

This seems to be one of the daily new fake nattosumo channels, who also use his videos to collect donations (easy to spot if you look at the channel info - and the old completely unrelated video at the start)

This was his major selling point for me as well. The English commentary is awful, all of it. Maybe the Japanese is too but at least then I don't know what they're saying so it's more of an atmospheric "excited man in background" thing.

The Japanese commentary is about the same as the English, nothing really more insightful. The only difference is sometimes there is a special guest, which can be really good to really bad. Overall there is slightly more annoying things about the Japanese commentary (i.e. the guy without a nose who calls every single osu sumo match はげしい相撲 with the ultra voiced げ).

The guest is the only thing that makes the commentary worth listening to, otherwise I prefer the pure hall sound you get on Abema for the lower divisions and on BS on the secondary audio channel. I would listen to Abema always if I could block the CM sound, fortunately the NHK-G stream on the mov servers works this basho, I watch or rather mostly listen to the recorded stream while recording it when I'm near the PC.

I think the Japanese commentary on NHK is beyond fantastic and Murray Johnson on English commenatry is superb. No complaints!

He's the most bearable of the English bunch, I'll give you that. Many of the others sound like English isn't their first language, which I obviously don't fault them for but it often seems like they're searching their mind for the correct word which results in awkward pauses and a play-by-play that's about 3 seconds behind the action.

Well, unless you go for the trickeration and get beat by resiliency north and south on a daily basis, you’ll be fine.

Nothing at all against the english commentary guys.

I just prefer the Japanese broadcasts because it helps me learn more about sumo in general - hearing the terms used  - the banter - the extra factoids about the wrestlers.  It also helps me with learning the language  - so there are major plusses to get the broadcast in Japanese in my opinion.

The English guys all do a great job.  Just given the choice, I'd pick the Japanese language broadcast for personal reasons.

A little update for Nattosumo's videos (with Jūryō and Makushita)
Things continue to be a little tough, especially if you're following the basho several days/weeks late.

Recently, his Odysee account was deleted. And days 11 to 15 of Aki's tournament were also deleted from Rumble and Bilibili. There's still the Telegram option (but you have to make an account), and the download platforms (or streaming/download hybrids, like Streamruby, which works well). For Kyushu, currently Rumble is back.

All links can be found on his Discord (account needed, free), in the "basho-video-links" lounge.

And for those who haven't read the messages above: for Makuuchi, the reference is back!

Sometimes our compadres have to use the English commentary in order to not get taken out so quickly. Personally as long as I'm able to see the action it doesn't matter to me. But times are tougher nowadays
