Kintamayama

The end?

Recommended Posts

After 13 years, I may be finally closed down . I got my first-ever copyright strike-two more and 13 years of work go out the window. Truth be told, my viewership has dwindled considerably and I have been thinking of retiring lately, (as I have for the last 13 years..), but didn't want to go this way. Anyway, we shall see.

Who initiated the strike? One strike is pretty normal for a popular channel, where it runs into problems is people abusing the system and continually targeting someone.

Kyokai, only Kyokai channel stuff (interviews translated) were hit.

Those guys make such bad business decisions.... Its almost as if they do not want any foreign viewership.

I must say, while there are other options for watching a basho, I choose your uploads every time and have since you were the only option. Hoping you can continue, but either way I can't thank you  enough for all you have done for the international sumo community.

That sucks! Could it be that with the new english Sumo Prime Time channel the kyokai is stepping up its patrolling? The timing doesn't fully add up, but still.

Not knowing much about hosting a YouTube channel, would it be an option to hide or remove the interviews and leave only the basho content there?

One option is to continue at a new channel and leave and preserve the old channel as is, adding only safe contents from now on

What is safe content? That is the question. If not putting up the daily bouts, I have no purpose. I'm not in Japan, so I have no access to anything, like that guy for instance..

Your comment videos before the basho are safe, you have to become YouTuber and post talk with others, like Gagamaru with Amuru or Takatoriki with Takagenji

And you could post at first to a new channel, what gets no copyright strike can be posted to your proper channel after the basho or after a short while

I'd love to, but the maximum I can do is interview myself about sumo. Without the bouts, it's kaput.

The strike came more than two years after I posted the video, so time has no meaning..

The guy who posts the complete Abema broadcast for all days and for several basho now has some video game characters dancing on the screen to confuse the copyright check, maybe something like this can help

If the strikes are just against your translations of interviews, then you should file a counter-notice. Because your translations are transformative (i.e. changing the language), about something that is in the public interest (i.e. newsworthy), and non-commercial (you are not monetized I think), you have an argument for fair use.

I’m not sure waking sleeping dogs is a good idea. I think I’ll just hope for the best.

I am still not sure why they would come after you - because your audience and value addition does not really impact their product.  The top matches are always available for free and summaries are broadcast for free as well.  Your value add is the shorter summary video with some very entertaining comments.  As far as I am aware, you have not monetized this.  You have only expanded the viewership of the sport beyond the territorial confines of the long archipelago.  And guess what, that exposure made many of us want to get tickets to a basho, to attend sumo events in Japan, to buy sumo goods.  In other words, create revenue streams that would otherwise not exist.  When they were selling the viewing plans, what was it - super expense (over a few hundred per basho?).  And the only added value was the ability to watch the lower rankers - since you could see the top divisions for free on TV.  They clearly have no idea what they are doing.  They should be asking you how to obtain your fan base and engaging with you to help support the development of an international audience, like the one you have cultivated.   I know I am greedy for saying so, but even among all the other scandals, I am very pissed by the way the Kyokai treats its foreign fans.

No monetization ever. Nhk  hasn’t complained, which is why mine and others’ highlights are mostly left alone. Why the Kyokai of all people has taken the translations down is Beyoncé.

Maybe they are becoming more proactive since they have launched the official YouTube channel and a English equivalent channel?

It'd be a huge shame if the channel got shut down, it's probably the only way to watch a lot of specific matches and basho. I've downloaded all the videos on there (I think anyway) as a backup, have you got a backup at all Kinta?

So sad, I still have hopes you find a way to go on. I like your videos and specially you comments. Your humor is very enjoyable. I miss your basho preview videos filmed in your (living?)room.

I started following sumo back in 1998-1999 when eurosport broadcasted the basho in a 5 day summarry.  I had to look it up. I remember Akebono vs Takanohana vs Wakanohana as yokozuna and Musashimaru as Ozeki and for example Toki with huge sideburns. After eurosport quit broadcasting a lost track of it.

When I went for a business trip to Japan, in Januari 2012, my local contact took me to the Ryogoku Kokugikan on walking distance from his office and I loved it instant again. That same basho I discovered kintamayama channel and since then never missed any video. In 2014, 2015 and 2018 I went back to Japan and visited at least one day live the the venue.

Hopefully the rights holder realizes that by shutting down this channel the lose a fast amount of oversees fans.

Since Kintamayama is a known name in the sumo world, isn't there anybody inside or close the NSK who could ask the head-honchos to leave you alone, if it gets worse? Not tell, just humbly ask?
