Akinomaki 40,231 Posted November 5, 2022 (edited) Day 1 today of the 100th memorial Inkare インカレ (inter-college), the last part was broadcast on NHK-E, the sumo federation had a free stream up to then: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OpVrVu-9nvU and fortunately also for the final hour https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oH744OFA6KA Choijil beat Nakamura in the final and is first time student yokozuna, with ms15TD qualification http://blog.livedoor.jp/nittaidaisumo/archives/5384891.html First time a Nittaidai final took place at the student championships. Nakamura already has the ms10TD, Choijil can get one if he wins the All Japan as well - 2 ms10TD in one year would be a novelty. 2nd year Hanaoka from Nichidai and Sarukawa from Tonodai as 3rd, Okada from Nittaidai, Kusano from Nichidai, Ikeda from Kanazawa Gakuin and Mita from Kindai are best 8. http://blog.livedoor.jp/nittaidaisumo/archives/5384887.html the others with sd90TD after Hanaoka are all 3rd years and likely can keep it till after graduation. opening ceremony o Edited November 5, 2022 by Akinomaki 4

Katooshu 3,182 Posted November 5, 2022 I guess it's the best result for the NSSU pals Choijil and Nakamura, now they both have fast-tracked starts and Choijil's probably become a bigger attraction to heya looking for a foreigner.
Bakayokozuna 52 Posted November 6, 2022 Well done Choijil ! He has been consistent all year and now wins the big one. Yeah i guess Nakamura, having ms10 secured already , is not too mad about that one
Akinomaki 40,231 Posted November 6, 2022 (edited) 2nd day, team event: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Ba1IMILT2o Nichidai won 3-2 against Nittaidai in the final, Nakamura and Choijil won, but best 8 Okada did not take part today, Nichidai's Hanaoka, Kusano and Kawabuchi won http://blog.livedoor.jp/nittaidaisumo/archives/5384907.html The Nittaidai team lineup of 8 - they had 12 in all at the event. Individual best 16 Dalaibaatar was not in the team. 3 with katakana names, all 3 of them competed in the team of 5, so one has to be Japanese shusshin, at least 50% have to be - according to the rules so far, maybe now the full team has to be with at least 50%. 7 at the runner award more from the first ever Nittaidai final at the inkare on day 1 - the last same school final was 16 years ago one of Nichidai o o o Edited November 6, 2022 by Akinomaki

Katooshu 3,182 Posted November 6, 2022 (edited) Nittaidai really suffered from Hanada's departure and the foreigner rule here. Had they been able to put in a 3rd Mongolian (Dalai) they'd have a much stronger lineup, but without being able to do that they had freshman Christopher Lee in (foreign name but Japanese raised), who was able to win vs low level teams but not any of the better ones (he also lost his first match in individuals). Nichidai on the other hand has a lot more depth to their squad and had plenty of options to field 5 strong competitors. Interesting to me is that it seems Kawabuchi, who hadn't competed since this event last year, only returned to action for the final two team matches, winning both. I would've expected him to have more of a warm-up prior to that. I don't see how he will have qualified for next month's All Japan Championship, but it looks like he should be good to go for his final year of college. With Nittaidai losing Hanada, 2 of their Mongolians, Nakamura, and Ishizaki, Nihon could be dominant next year, as their strongest competitors are all 2nd or 3rd year and no other team has comparable talent in those years. Katooshu 3,182 Posted November 6, 2022 (edited) Having caught up on all the matches now, Nakamura can't get to pro sumo fast enough. It's like he's throwing kids around and he needs bigger challenges. Between the Kokutai and Student Championship he's only had 1 match that wasn't a breeze, and I'm not convinced he gave 100 percent in that one. When guys are repeatedly going 12-0 or 11-1 at these tournaments it's too easy for them. Edited November 6, 2022 by Katooshu

Katooshu 3,182 Posted November 7, 2022 (edited) Haru would be my guess - it's the most common starting basho for college grads. Edited November 7, 2022 by Katooshu

mikawa 1,794 Posted November 12, 2022 A short documentary about two Hiroshima rikishi at Nittaidai - Takuma Terao and Kengo Furuta, both lightweight wrestlers. The have been great friends and rivals ever since a young age, and joined Nittaidai together. Two months ago, at the National Weight Class Championships, Takuma won the under-75kg category, and later that day, Kengo won the under-85kg category. This was the first time in the tournament's history that two rikishi from Hiroshima both won Yusho. They are later shown competing at the National Student Championships last week: 1

Akinomaki 40,231 Posted December 17, 2022 Choijil on the 12th reported his yusho to the mayor of Odawara, where he went to Asahigaoka high school.
