Sumo Do Sumo Don't - TV Series Remake!

Recommended Posts

Has anyone watched this yet on Disney+ and if so how have you liked it?

Being a huge fan of the 1992 film, I can't wait to start this up. The first 3 episodes were made available last week.

So rare to see sumo in film/tv, so hoping this sticks around for a bit!

Watched episode 1. Amateurish over-acting, cringe at times, clearly geared towards a young audience. I'll watch it all of course, but I don't think it will match up to the original movie. 6 out of 10 on the KInt-scale.

Episode 2 seems a bit better and it could be that I'm getting used to the comedy over-acting - didn't bother me that much this episode. The storyline is getting somewhat interesting and there's a lot of stuff that sumo fans  will find familiar - some "insider information" we can smile at in satisfaction because we are in the know... 45 minute episode which could easily have been 30 minutes, as at least 15 minutes  are a total waste of time with  needless shiko counting and "time-fillers", like a water battle with hoses etc..  Still, onward to episode 3..

So far I like it a lot. I expected something much worse given my general impression of Japanese television dramas. Honoka is a good character, well acted. The show is at its finest when she is on the screen. Clearly the actress has put much work into practising and studying sumo. There is definitely some overacting from others, though I sometimes enjoyed this. The bodybuilder is the only one whose acting, or writing, borders on the genuinely bad. But he is supposed to be a stupid character... As an ensemble I can see the characters working and developing well. It's going to be unapologetically a feel-good story, but I'm fine with that. The return of a few actors from the film are also a welcome delight.

The only really annoying aspect is the music!

Watched the first three episodes and have a pretty good impression. Very formulistic and follows the basic tropes closely. No surprises so far. I'm looking forward to the next episode.

Episode three -getting better.  Acting either growing on me or getting better - almost no cringe-factor. Story developing nicely, much less time-wasting, but still a whole lot of shikoing going on. But will there be diarrhea'?

Wow! Absolutely adored episode 1. Such a relaxing tranquil mood this show put me in.

Love the call backs to the original. From actors to music cues, each put a smile on my face. Loved seeing Aoki's "How sumo changed my life" book.

And the lead actress really has a convincing portrayal of the basics! Can't wait to start episode 2.

Episode 4 was already exciting with the actual actual. Acting still cringey at times though.

The summer camp scenes were fantastic in episodes 6 and 7. This show continues to put me in a great mood everytime I put it on. Trying to spread out my watches to keep the enjoyment of a 1st time watchthrough go as long as possible. Sad there are only 3 episodes left for me to watch, which is always the mark for a show I'm thoroguhly enjoying. I haven't heard any buzz around it, so not holding out hope for a 2nd season, but do wish the show ends on a nice happy ending with plot strings wrapped up nicely.

The entire cast really is top notch all around for my needs of a great show, but Honoka is just perfect.

Just finished the show and absolutely adored it from start to finish. Pays great homage to the original film, while standing on it's own as a fine piece. The characters were perfect and mood absolutely 100% what I was hoping for. Shed a tear in the 2nd to last episode and every credit roll left me with a smile on my face.

Season 2 please? Keppare Disney+!

So I guess I'm the grumpy old man then. I found the acting painfully amateur at times, storyline inconsistent, outcome obvious. It was quite moving at times, the action scenes were well done . Easily could have been done in six episodes. A lot of dead time. 7 out of 10 on my scale. And I'm in a good mood today.
