New recruits Haru 2023

Recommended Posts

FWIW, Miyagino-beya are holding a shindeshi announcement party at Kishiwada Grand Hall in Osaka on the 29th. To me that would be overkill for just any old deshi, so it's surely a significant recruitment. If not Nakamura, then perhaps filling their foreigner spot. We'll just have to wait and see.

Could it be a delayed one for Mukainakano, Kawazoe, and Ochiai?

The poster says to introduce high hopes newbie Ochiai and more, the shindeshi who will be the pillars of the heya from now on.  Mukainakano is no newbie anymore, Kawazoe and Otani are new for the Osaka supporters, the party is in Kishiwada, Osaka. Focus on Otani, could be to introduce Nakamura if he joins, but it may be just for the three who are doing well already.

Shindeshi kensa is skipped for Haru to avoid potential chain infection from graduation ceremonies, IIRC.

But the time limit to apply for the shindeshi kensa is long gone, usually the media report the number then. BTW, cancelling the shindeshi kensa is because the shindeshi could bring the virus to the heya after attending the graduation ceremony, exactly what Nakamura plans to do.

The 3rd Nakamura in this thread, but this one really belongs here and plans to debut in jonokuchi for Natsu: from Nomura middle school in the home of Otoi-ozumo Seiyo city in Ehime: (most likely) Yumejiro Nakamura 中村路郎 (15, 184cm, 130kg) joined Isegahama-beya, his dream is yokozuna - accordingly he'll start as 之富士 Yumenofuji o. Nakamura is from Matsuyama, Ehime, started sumo in 4th grade and in 2nd year changed middle school, moving from home to Seiyo. He finished 5th with the team at a national tournament last year, a member of the heya koenkai noticed his performance and in September he got an invitation to join. He actually wanted to continue at Nomura high school, but the oyakata persuade him personally and he decided to enter ozumo. http://www.ehime-np.co.jp/article/news202303260012

last October the oyakata was at the school for the announcement

img7bc641f942ae90e5.jpeg

at the graduation ceremony on the 17th he already appeared in rikishi attire

Inatsu o Shimabukuro 島袋偉海 (no data yet) from Iejima, Okinawa, captain of the sumo club of Chubu agricultural high school, enters Hanaregoma-beya next month and starts in jonokuchi next basho, the oyakata was there yesterday for the encouragement rally. He'll start under his real name Shimabukuro as the first rikishi from the island and wants to become yokozuna.

A very Okinawan surname.  Ex-SPEED member Hiroko is from Okinawa, and Hawaiian ukelele player Jake had grandparents from there.

Not that I've seen - Akinomaki likely had it right that it was to introduce the Osaka supporters to those recruits they hadn't met yet. It probably also served as the heya's senshuraku party, since it wouldn't make sense to have that on senshuraku and then a separate event three days later for what would surely be pretty much the same supporters.

Fujihara for Tokitsukaze. He's just big, but without real sumo experience and until recently had no interest in sumo, he did swimming in primary school and played the tuba in his club in Ryogoku middle school - in early childhood he won a Sumida ward wampaku tournament once. Grandad had told him: "If you join, best do it after middle school". He is the son of the eldest daughter of Kurohimeyama, cousin of Tanakayama - he hasn't told his cousin that he enters. Tokitsukaze is the heya closest to his home, so he went there.

Kenshin Nakamura (15, 165cm, 88kg) plans to join the heya after graduating from middle school in Kakegawa, Shizuoka and have his dohyo debut in Osaka. He had the objective to go to the sumo world in the future since primary school, but there was no opportunity to do sumo in the vicinity, so he did judo from first year on. An acquaintance introduced him to the oyakata and he decided to join, after an experience stay in the heya in August. The rikishi of his aspiration is Mitoryu.

Seems his entry got delayed somehow, the new article says he'll be in maezumo for Natsu.

The  shikona for this Nakamura (oyakata name and thus disallowed as shikona) was announced at his farewell party in Kakegawa: Katsunishiki 葛錦, taken from the local specialty kuzu 葛, his father and the oyakata thought about it, the reading is for the hope to win, katsu,

Soon to be Katsunishiki (the Sponichi guys don't know that yet) is alone in the heya right now, Mitoryu is at the jungyo. Nakamura joined the heya during the Osaka-basho, now he's at 94kg. https://www.sponichi.co.jp/sports/news/2023/04/04/kiji/20230404s00005000570000c.html

But only if the one absent also skips the next shindeshi-kensa, else we have the same as last year with Okuyama, a delayed Haru basho kensa: the banzuke spot in jonokuchi is already reserved, the banzuke writing is under way.

Which means also the 3rd Nakamura here already has a shikona which can/has to be be written on the banzuke.

I wonder why the main Nakamura still didn't have the entry press conference, his shikona should be fixed by now - but we already know that he likes to take his time. And he still has plenty of time, till just before the first torikumi for the basho get compiled, since he isn't on the next banzuke.

Yuu Morishima  森島優 (14, 167cm, 108kg) will enter Oitekaze-beya. 3rd year at Kasamatsu middle school, he started sumo in 5th grade

Training 2 times a week was hard for him, who liked to do things slowly, at his own pace, but at the club he developed a love for sumo. Last summer he finished 3rd at a Gifu prefecture tournament, but also due to Corona he has little tournament experience.

Till 5th year Morishima had tried mainly horse riding and boxing, but didn't continue at that for long. After he decided to join ozumo, he quickly gained power in the one year since that - he aims to become the youngest makuuchi rikishi

On 02/03/2023 at 21:43, Akinomaki said:

Morishima on the 1st was at the Kasamatsu town hall to tell the mayor about his ambitions, become a sekitori who gets the town excited. The mayor promised they all will form a koenkai and have a big party of locals go to the basho and cheer for him. Morishima will join the heya on the 7th, his shikona will be 大馬翔, Daibasho: from the shisho's Daishoyama combined with his father being a keiba jockey (on the left) o

He started with horse riding in 3rd grade, but keiba is the opposite of sumo: you have to lose weight to always keep around 50kg - and he loves to eat, especially sweet things like matcha ice cream - in 5th grade he already had 80kg, now he's at least twice as heavy as his father, who is mainly reported as having 51kg, only Nikkan says less than 50kg. Daibasho lost 6kg and was only 102kg today, and down 1cm to 166cm, though he has more hair now.

He has 3 younger sisters and a 4 year old younger brother, his goal is not so much a banzuke rank but to become a rikishi who gives a dream to others.

The Kasamatsu racecourse is where the famous racehorse Oguri_Cap started its career, the sports papers, which all mainly contain keiba, see in him one to aim to become the Oguri Cap of sumo.

Yeah, I assumed he'd be in this one after all - at 165cm he risked not passing a non-Haru examination without a gain in height. I think some article writers (perhaps local reporters who only get the sumo beat when a hometown recruit turns up) are getting mixed up because of the delayed Haru exam. There are times when I can't keep it straight who's joining in which basho too, frankly.
