Sorry this is appearing so late, it's been a busy couple of days.

At first it looked like all sekitori would start the basho, but at the last minute Komusubi Abi withdrew due to injury, causing the torikumi to be reshuffled somewhat.

Here's the full list of absentees - let's hope this thread isn't as busy as last basho!

Right elbow dissecans osteochondritis and left ankle free body are expected to require 3 weeks of rehabilitation treatment through right elbow arthroscopic and left ankle arthroscopic surgery.

I take no pleasure with that translation, but we get the drift.

Jk15w Hokuozan

Ex-Hagiwara may fall off the banzuke next basho; this is his sixth basho out of action, plummeting from Ms35.:'-(Everyone else at Narutobeya is starting except Yamane, who spends his fourth basho sitting out, and is Bg.

Bad physical condition, aftereffects from Asanowaka's recent Corona infection https://www.sponichi.co.jp/sports/news/2022/09/11/kiji/20220911s00005000466000c.htm

The medical certificate published today says two weeks of rest needed as of today to treat the after-effects from the infection. Asanowaka on the 29th had a fever of 39.6 °C . and went into isolation for 10 days, returning on the 8th. On the 9th he again had a light fever, 37.6°C, which was treated with fever medicine. That day he complaint of a soar throat, dripping nose and went to hospital again for a check and got the diagnosis of after-effects.  o

Other articles say he went today for a check  o

This is the first case of a medical certificate for a sekitori for Corona after-effects o

The named days don't explain the late kyujo decision on day 1 though.

Four withdrawals among the lower divisions ahead of Day 3:

Sd31w Wakakinsho

Sd46w Saidaiji (fusenpai Day 2)

Sd85w Hokutoyakumo (fusenpai Day 2)

Jk17w Sachinofuji - favoured his left leg after winning his bout today

Daiseizan had surgery on a right hand injury on September 7th. Two months recovery time indicated, so maybe he'll be back in time for Kyushu.

Kanryu suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury in his left knee during the Nagoya basho, and was admitted to hospital on August 6th for surgery. Likely a long-term absence.

I posted about this in the general discussion thread - they goofed (or changed how they do this) by giving him a sekitori opponent Day 2 and no opponent Day 1; when there was one sekitori withdrawal day 1, his planned matchup couldn't happen.

Feel bad for Daiseizan, but this probs gives him a Jonidan Yusho and bonus, so not the worst thing.

I may have missed this elsewhere, but what's the latest on Ishiura? Surely intai-speculation is high, given his age and smooth post-sumo career plans.

Pretty much what you just said, but no concrete information as far as I've seen.

What do we know about his retirement plans? Has he secured a kabu?

His father is the head sumo coach/principal at Tottori Johoku, one of the sumo powerhouse high schools. It's been speculated that Ishiura will be a sumo coach there, in order to secure a recruitment pipeline for Miyagino.

Makes sense! I knew his dad was a coach there, but hadn't thought through Ishiura taking on a similar role as part of a greater Miyagino strategy. Thank you!

I suppose interesting aside, I wonder if it would be possible for Ishiura to obtain a kabu to stay on with the Kyokai in some capacity and still take on a coaching role. Likely unnecessary, but would add an interesting official connecton between Tottori and Miyagino stable or the broader Isegahama ichimon.
