Rare kimarite watch

Recommended Posts

We're going to be on the lookout for rare kimarites this basho, it seems. In 1955 there were 68 kimarites. In 1960, they expanded to 70. In 2001, 12 were added, and we currently have 82. Additionally, three non-kimarite were added to the then existing 2, so now there are 5 non-kimarite (where you lose to yourself inadvertently) - Isamiashi, koshikudake, tsukite, tsukihiza,  and fumidashi. There are three kimarites which have never been used since 1955: Kakezori (hooking backwards body drop) , Shumokuzori (bell hammer backwards body drop), and Sototasukizori. NHK announcers will be looking out for the kimarites, especially those that have not been used in Makuuchi yet in the Reiwa era. There are 25 of these.

Some bouts can even be seen, some kimarites with relevant photos.

Oh, darn. I looked at the thread title, and thought that some manufacturer had come out with a watch with 12 rare kimarite depicted around the dial. Alas.

I think Ura's Tsutaezori can be added to this list.

The other way round - they dropped it

Well, knock the kawazugake out of this list.

So, Hoshoryu reads the papers, or lurks on Sumoforum.

For what it's worth I doubt he deliberately executed it. It looks to me more of a case of Midorifuji foolishly attempting to play Hōshōryū's game and the latter simply having better reflexes and reactions to collapse the attempt, and the gyōji just called what they saw.

do the gyoji decide what the winning technique was? i thought the guy that reads them out gets to decide.

great reaction from Hoshoryu to counter Midorifuji's leg sweep with a sweep of his own. particularly exciting after a day of quick losses in the rest of the top division

That guy (guys, actually, there's two of them) is also a gyōji, just in business wear sitting at a table to the side rather than in Edo attire like the one on the dohyō.

It is nominally the guy who does the dohyo iri shikona announcement.

This gyoji only announces the kimarite at once and decides alone if it is a clear and easy case. Otherwise he calls the video room, where the oyakata specialist for the techniques decides. Thus sometimes the announcement  comes when the next pair is already on or a correction is announced then.

Anyone else think the gasshōhineri should have been tokkurinage? Not that it would have been on the chart, though.

I thought tokkurinage first time. But, because I don't know what a gasshohineri is (first time I see it), no idea (Laughing...)
