A yusho next basho? Yes. This playoff? Depends on how desperate they are for a new Yokozuna.

I don't think they want to have 2 yokozuna-ozeki and no proper one

it's been 102 years or something. Think they can break even more tradition.

That's a valid point. If Takakeisho wins the basho with Hoshoryu or Wakatakakage churning out a 13-2 at the same time for a Ozeki-promotion, it could still happen, but that's highly unlikely.

Excellent ending to a mediocre year where no one has been driving the bus. Get used to it, we're entering a long driverless era. Abi is my man- ecstatically happy. The other two? Not my favorites, but I do love them all. I feel for Takayasu, but not surprised at all. Go Abi- next Ozeki. Mitakeumi, next hiramaku!! I get my mornings back again!! Yay!! Abi!!!!!

They're not going to deny an undeniable record like a 14-1 or 15-0. It's only a bit grey if it's 13-2 or less, imo. But let's also see how Takayasu, Wakatakakage and Hoshoryu do next basho as well. The Kyokai can use its discretion to promote TY after 11-4 > 12-3, even though it includes hiramaku records. WTK has less of a case with 11-4 > 8-7, but he has a yusho and if he gets a second with a good record it could be enough to justify the nod. Hoshoryu makes the weakest case of all as this is his first double-digit KK at Sekiwake, so technically only the start of an Ozeki run, but if he somehow managed a zensho, that's a reasonable excuse to promote. If Takakeisho ends 13-2Y, and one of the other three can become Ozeki, it's easier for the Kyokai to give TK the rope I feel.

Abi says: "I didn't intend to henka- I wanted to hit and shift , but Takayasu came in so hard I was moved back. I'm glad i was able to give back something good after the trouble I've caused. (Crying). I trained very hard after my injury and listened to my oyakata. This is the result.."

In the interview, the announcer mentioned that Shikoroyama-oyakata has been hospitalized. Could have been added inspiration for Abi's win.

When asked what he thought his oyakata would think of his yusho, Abi answered: "I've done nothing but cause him trouble, so hopefully this win has made him a little happy."

That's when the tears started to flow.

They never intend it.

the steam translation for me had him say "I didn't henka, I just moved sideways." that makes way more sense.

A healthy, committed Abi in this era of no dominant rikishi at the top is very much an Ozeki candidate, along with Hoshoryu, Wakatakakage, Kotonowaka, and even Kiribayama.

Next year should be both entertaining and unpredictable, and the sumo landscape is likely to look much different a year from now than it does today.

No, Kintamayama's translation is spot on.

This would be pure irony, henka is moving sideways - that wouldn't be said in a yusho interview, especially not when in tears afterwards

Whatever payback Abi needed for that henka was arguably immediately granted when he had to deal with the aftermath of Takayasu's concussion/breakdown right in front of him. Material consequences aren't necessary, just an utterly massive guilt trip. I find it mildly unnerving how most of Herouth's Sumo Twitter community is excoriating him right now so badly when I don't think he'll pull a henka in his life ever again.

I'll be honest, we're talking about Takayasu's chances at ōzeki but I fear there's a small chance he retires. That's the second playoff he's lost in a year, and he wasn't even disappointed in the hanamichi - he was just crushed.

At least Takakeishō retrieves whatever sad sorry remnants of ōzeki pride Mitakeumi and Shōdai left in their wake. It's a relief to see them finally headed down the banzuke and to make space for more deserving candidates.

In the reply, Takayasu's head appeared to connect with Abi's left shoulder square on, so was it really a henka, or was Abi's explanation an accurate account of what actually happened?

Yeah, I don't think that will cut it. The applause seemed pretty tepid during the speech. Fans don't wait decades to watch a 3 way playoff to see a guy win it with a henka.

Come on, that was obviously a henka. When they first touch Abi is already off the ground jumping to the side.

I wanted to hit and shift is what he said. I wouldn't rely on steam translations, though..

No henka-Takayasu's head would be nowhere near Abi's chest if it was a henka. Shifting at the tachiai is not an automatic henka, as ex- Yokozuna Harumafuji may tell you if you ever ask him.

No, and it wasn't a henka and the applause did not sound tepid at all to me. I guess we hear what we want to hear, me included.  Again, Takayasu's seemingly serious injury wouldn't have happened if it was a henka.

You're being ridiculous - Abi's already midair flying to the side when they connect.

And what an "interesting" banzuke it looks like being. I'm one of those people who is working up a first draft before the championship interview has finished and, well, you'll see what I mean. The upper M ranks are just horrible.
