Wow.

Big move. I hope this results in better internationalisation/translation of sumo content. Chris sounded very butthurt when he commented on the NSK's chanko video in English, but he had a point on the sufficiency (or lack thereof) of the translation.

Anyway, these are Chris Gould’s concern about NSK’s english content. Any comments?

Yeah this was what I was referring to when I said he was butthurt. Idk, honestly that spiel alone is just, bad juju and stinks of ego over devotion to covering sumo. Not to say he doesn't do good work somewhere, but.... urgh.

At the very least I hope official competition makes him reconsider his angle a bit.

I'm sure he rubbed all of the NSK officials the wrong way -- BIG TIME!  I cringe just thinking about his encounter in the street.  He probably gave them the impression that there was no way they would be successful without bringing him on board to take charge.

I wouldn't quite put it so strongly, but that was roughly what I had in mind, too. One can only hope he put it across more forcefully on his channel than he did to the NSK.

What does he even mean when he says he had a conversation with “them”? Who? The whole sumo association? Far too vague. Who you mention an idea to kind of matters.

Chris did express his concerns and did be offering his services, then did the NSK be most frosty. I do be grateful for this, as then did I imagine what what do be happening if Chris did be becoming the voice of sumo in the language that does be called English.

More on the breaking Hiro Morita story.

The veteran announcer is no longer an NHK employee but will still work with the national broadcaster on live sumo and continue doing NHK World’s Grand Sumo Preview.

Hiro also asked to let people know that he is a freelancer, that he’ll work for whomever, and that he doesn’t belong to any particular organization including the Japan Sumo Association.

What that means is that while he is doing this channel with the JSA, he isn't bound to them and, unlike in the past, is now free to be a guest or work with any site, YouTube channel, etc.

He's not out of any gig.

Still doing all the same stuff as before for NHK - just not a company employee anymore. 

That has freed him up to do the YouTube Channel with the Sumo Kyokai.

He's also able to do any other projects since he is completely freelance now.

Elephant in the room. It’s "got beaten", not "got beat". One tiny example.  Nitpicking? Sure. It's NHK's English commentary, not some private youtube channel. There is no question the man knows his sumo and is well connected and has great stories and can be quite entertaining and seems to be an all-around nice chap. A few small tweaks, is all. He gets a lot of negative feedback on the world wide web. Someone has to correct him. No big deal, but yes big deal to some.

Thanks for the info about this. Really looking forward to watching this new Sumo Prime Time programme. Really cool to be getting more sumo content. I think Morita Hiro has great sumo knowledge so I think this will be a good product.

I have commented on his "alternate locutions" several times.  They are sometimes irritating, but I wouldn't get rid of him over it.

In many sports broadcasts there is an "anchor" ( a person with a Journalism degree) who does the straight reporting, and a "color commentator" (usually an ex-athlete) who puts the "color" or interest into the broadcast.  It's my understanding that Sumo broadcasts had that system in the past, but now they have a single commentator (for NHK World), and the one announcer has to wear both hats.  To my ears, Murray is more anchor than color, Hiroshi is more color, and Ross splits it down the middle.

On that topic while I find his Hiro-isms quite jarring too, I hope they're the sort of thing that only come out in the heat of the moment, and he gets to rehearse and clean up scripts when he's making content for the channel. Malapropisms are quite understandable when under pressure especially if one's English isn't quite purebred, but there's no excuse for something that has had the time and space to be edited.
