YDC convenes after Nagoya 2022?

Recommended Posts

It won't. Covid has postponed the YDC meeting that was scheduled for the 25th of July. No new date has been set.

Not that there was anything to discuss in the first place...

The resurgence of the Ozeki ? We might see both of them go 10-5. 8th yusho for Terunofuji who pulled his weight as a Yokozuna?

So what?

Something to talk about. What do they usually say, when there isn't any scandal brewing? "The Yokozuna upheld his rank and the Ozeki were good/bad/ugly." It's mostly a "so what" situation. And maybe they would have talked about what to do with the kyujo covid guys, who knows.. I for one was looking forward to hear what they had to say as usual, especially as we have two new members who may have come up with some clever observations.

The only thing I have to say is, thank goodness they apparently haven't discovered Zoom. Otherwise we would have no respite from their boundless wisdom.

(Being very sarcastic, for the avoidance of doubt.)

Yes, I was expecting them to opine on the Mitakeumi status at least. Maybe they will do something informally with Zoom.

It's a tough call as to what they might have to say.  On the one hand, Mitakeumi wasn't in the middle of a tsuna run, and they aren't the ODC.  On the other hand, with groups like this someone always wants to get their oar in the water.

I don't think they have much to say. The ozeki both got 10+ wins, and Mitakeumi got lucky. If Shodai could come back like he did, you could play the "what if" game about Mitakeumi. Terunofuji was in contention for the yusho until the very last match, just like a yokozuna should be.

All the YDC can really say is "you did good but do better," which they could really just print out on a form letter and keep it in a drawer for just these situations.

I agree, the only real conversation they can have is whether mitakeumi remains kadoban. And since he didn't clear it, I think they have to say he remains kadoban.

That would be a rather novel development if the YDC were to decide who's kadoban and who isn't...

Well they can discuss it, right? They seem to discuss ozeki regardless of Yokozuna chances.

What exactly do you expect them to discuss about it? "Member 1: The Kyokai will have Mitakeumi stay kadoban now, is that how it works? --- Member 2: Ayup, I guess so..." As an internal rules question for the Kyokai it's absolutely not the YDC's remit, so there's nothing meaningful that they could contribute to the topic even in a theoretical manner.

What they would have said:

Takakeishō: His behaviour in his bout against Ichinojō was unbecoming of an ōzeki, but he did well to stay in the title race and to beat Terunofuji on the last day with his own sumo. We expect to see similar results from him in the future and to wrestle with dignity.

Shōdai: His fighting spirit to clear kadoban was commendable including defeats of the yokozuna and eventual champion, and we hope he stops going kadoban and starts tournaments in a stronger manner.

Mitakeumi: His sumo did not look good and he was lucky to be withdrawn halfway due to COVID and for the NSK to confirm that his rank would be preserved. We hope that he heals up and comes back to produce results worthy of the rank.

Like Yamanashi said, just because they can't do anything about it doesn't mean they can't talk about it. Lower sanyaku is even further out of their remit yet I recall a basho where they did castigate an almost entirely MK lower sanyaku.

You're talking about something completely different now, qualitative comments about ozeki performance that already happened. I was responding specifically to this part:

That implied that it's somehow for the YDC to determine what Mitakeumi's fate ought to be going forward. If you've got any prior examples of them attempting to interfere with the banzuke-making like that, I'm all ears.

Ah, yes. No, they definitely can't do anything about what the NSK decides to do with Mitakeumi, but that sure as hell won't stop them from mouthing off, right? There's a good chance some wag is going to say "he should have been demoted with his performance that early" or something - if they had met, of course.

That sounds more like Kitanofuji babble, not a YDC comment.
