Rikishi Status - 2022 Nagoya Basho

Recommended Posts

All five sekitori listed as kyujo now on the Kyokai site. Surely more heya-wide exits.

As with the Musashigawa withdrawal, apparently only after the day's action had already started - the very first Sadogatake rikishi, Kotofuno in jonokuchi, actually still competed, then the fusenpai parade began.

Are there any matches where both opponents had to pull out for tonight?

As long as only one stable leaves the competition, this won't happen (since they can't fight each other). As far as I know, only Kotonwaka's is out tonight. But who knows going forward.

Tamanoi and Sadogatake both left today. It's easy to crosscheck the sekitori, but it's not out of the question that such a matchup might happen for the toriteki.

All of Sadogatake are out of course, including Kotoekou and Kotoshouhou and the two emerging kotos down in Sandanme. Interesting to see how this will be dealt with banzuke-wise

So that's 20 of 70 sekitori out? 12 heya? 7 of today's 18 scheduled bouts canceled? Where's the hidden camera?

Poor @Yubinhaad!  Normally you have to spend all the effort scanning the sources for comings and goings, but this basho you also have to spit out data like a copying machine.

It seems like those withdrawing far enough in advance that they're not listed a subsequent torikumi are not awarded a fusenpai? E.g. Oshoma was pulled after his bout on Day 8, when he was 5-3, in time to redo the Day 9 torikumi on which he does not appear, and his official record is listed as 5-3 with 7 absences. More examples in the lower divisions. This seems like it introduces an extra complication into the question of how they will treat the COVID-kyujo records for banzuke-making purposes.

I wonder what they're going to do with fully absent rikishi from Covid-affected stables other than Tagonoura. Naruto's Yamane in jonokuchi in particular, who would normally have to drop off the banzuke - but who's to say that he wouldn't have shown up for at least one bout if he'd been allowed to? In theory that goes for every rikishi who was 0-0-x at the time his stable was removed from competition, but obviously late joins are exceedingly rare outside the lowest division.

The only thing I can say is, good thing we don't play Guess the Jonokuchi Banzuke.

Jokes aside, maybe they give them the benefit of the doubt and just put them at the very bottom of jonokuchi instead of making them BG? Limited time offer only for this basho for obvious reasons. Surely the shimpan are aware of this practice.

It's pretty normal (or I guess, happens a great deal, though not always) for people to withdraw after their matches but before the schedules are drawn up for their next matches for any division other than Makuuchi.  It happens a lot in the lower divisions where you might fight the first day and get injured, and know you need to withdraw even before the second day of the round starts, but it's even possible for Juryo if you manage to get the withdrawal in quick enough before the next matches are drawn up.  At least, I'm pretty sure they don't do teh Juryo matches until after all the results are in, which means there has to be at least a small amount of time in which it's possible.

So he was 7-5 in actual matches at M17, gotta be one of the weakest sansho runs.
