They should still have had masks on, to be honest. I don't see why the rikishi have to put them on heading into the shitaku but the shimpan, who aren't really doing anything that exerting (other than stepping onto the dohyō) are excused from masking up.

And they sit more or less in the crowd, unmasked. I know the crowd is masked, but masks are only so good. And you can see a lot of improperly worn masks. I'm not really surprised the shimpan are getting COVID.

Here's one, though:  By day 15, the yusho is between the two remaining Makuuchi wrestlers, Ichinojo (Minato, 10 rikishi) and Nishikigi (Isenoumi, 12 rikishi).

You may be right.  I took the two best-performing rikishi with fewer heya members.  The problem with Tamawashi winning at 9-6 with six fusensho is that the other two are likely to get some, too, and they only need three.

This thing is getting more and more ridiculous... How will they treat all those rikishi?

Will the rikishi absent from the begenning be granted rank protection? And those already make-koshi? (for sure they should be demoted, but to which extent?) And those already kachi-koshi?

From now on they should either stop rank protection or mid-basho tests...  covid is here to stay (who knows for how long, but in any case those exceptionnal temporary measures cannot be considered as exceptionnal temporary anymore)

All five sekitori listed as kyujo now on the Kyokai site. Surely more heya-wide exits.

As with the Musashigawa withdrawal, apparently only after the day's action had already started - the very first Sadogatake rikishi, Kotofuno in jonokuchi, actually still competed, then the fusenpai parade began.
